Ant-Man ending explained: How Ant-Man stops Yellowjacket
Many won’t realize but Ant-Man was originally part of the Avengers in the comics. However, the Avengers movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe focused on other members of the team, and Scott Lang didn’t catch on for movie fans for a little while longer. When Ant-Man did come out, Paul Rudd proved that he deserved to be in the MCU all along.
It may have helped that Guardians of the Galaxy came out first. The Avengers movies certainly have their comedic elements, but they are action movies. They include a lot of serious moments. Guardians of the Galaxy helped to bring more comedy, and that allowed Ant-Man to thrive.
Scott Lang gets his suit in Ant-Man
The first movie focuses on how Scott Lang became the titular hero. Hank Pym had decided to resign from the government organization that he created his suit for. Too much of his work was being replicated by SH.I.E.L.D. and he wouldn’t stand for that.
That meant the suit was placed under lock and key. Well, that was until Scott Lang showed up. Just out of prison after a Robin Hood moment, Scott is struggling to find a job. He agrees to take on a burglary to get some money, but all he finds is the suit. What is he meant to do with that?
Of course, he tries it on and the rest is history. He becomes the new Ant-Man. He does try to return the suit, and ends up arrested for his actions. It turns out that everything was stages for Pym to find a new wearer of the suit. He needs Scott to help him steal the Yellowjacket suit.
Ant-Man takes down Yellowjacket as he harnesses the powers
The Yellowjacket suit turns out to have been taken by Darren Cross, Pym’s former protégé. Cross wants to sell the suit technology to HYDRA, and our heroes cannot allow that to happen.
A fight ends up breaking out, as Cross wears the Yellowjacket suit and shrinks down in size. The only thing that Scott can do is also shrink down. However, Scott doesn’t really want to do this at first. He does have a plan in mind, though. He sabotages Cross’ suit as he shrinks, potentially killing the man.
This is all in the Quantum Realm, which is where Janet van Dyne has been all this time. More on that in a moment.
Scott manages to escape the Quantum Realm, and he is able to set up his own security firm. The comics take a dark twist in that Scott’s daughter, Cassie, is killed, but that doesn’t happen in the movies. That’s a good thing.
Hope learns the truth about her mom’s disappearance in Ant-Man
We can’t end this without explaining Hope’s storyline. Hope teams up with Scott and her father, but she isn’t on the greatest terms with Hank. She blames Hank for the disappearance of her mother, Janet van Dyne, years earlier. That’s not surprising. Janet was forced to shrink to stop a ballistic missile.
That led to Janet being lost. Hank presumed that she had died, but he hoped that she was out there somewhere. As Scott ended up in the Quantum Realm accidentally, Hank realized that this was where his wife may have ended up. That’s exactly what happened!
We know the Quantum Realm becomes important for everyone. Not only does it create a storyline for the sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp, but it also leads to the way The Avengers are able to reverse the blip in Avengers: Endgame.
Back to Janet, though. With everything that Scott goes through, Hope is able to gain her own hope. Scott passed on a message from Janet that he got while in the Quantum Realm, allowing everyone to start up a mission to save her. This leads to Hope getting her own suit and wings in one of the mid-credit scenes, becoming The Wasp in the second Ant-Man movie.
