With not one but two Avengers movies on the horizon, things are about to get pretty intense in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They've already gotten pretty intense recently now that Deadpool and Wolverine are a part of the franchise, but with the end of the Multiverse Saga in sight, big plans are in the works and fans are excited to see them come to fruition.

It doesn't get bigger than Avengers movies (the previous four are in the Top 16 highest-grossing movies of all time, with the two most recent in the Top 6). And Marvel is already pulling out all the stops, bringing back the one and only Robert Downey Jr. to portray the new MCU villain Doctor Doom. He won't be the only comeback, either, as fans are anticipating a huge multiversal showdown with plenty of beloved returnees.

Multiple new reports have suggested that another one of the most beloved actors will be back too.

Tom Hiddleston's Loki will be "at the center" of the Multiverse Saga

According to Marvel insider account Marvel News, Tom Hiddleston is expected to reprise his role as Loki in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This comes shortly after veteran insider Alex Perez confirmed that the character would be "at the center of it all" in response to a question about the God of Mischief's role in the Multiverse Saga.

This is exciting for a number of reasons. We last saw the MCU's Trickster in the season finale of his own Disney Plus series Loki when he sacrificed the life he had in order to protect his friends and loved ones at the Time Variance Authority. He did that by gaining the one thing he always wanted: A throne. But this wasn't a selfish throne; it was one at the end of time, where he would sit and oversee the countless branches of the Sacred Timeline. He had become the God of Stories, replacing He Who Remains and seemingly ready for the Multiversal War.

That war will no longer be against Kang the Conqueror, as the character has been seemingly replaced as the MCU's villain with Downey's Doctor Doom. But the multiverse will still come into play, which means that Loki does have to return at some point, and the Avengers movies are the obvious choice. And that's what fans are hoping will happen, as we're all waiting to see that long-awaited reunion between Loki and his brother Thor.

The last time Loki appeared in an MCU movie, the 2012 version hopped into the timeline in 2019's Avengers: Endgame and kickstarted the story that began the Disney Plus series. The original Loki, however, sacrificed his life to protect Thor, going up against Thanos and dying in front of his brother's eyes. It was a heart-wrenching moment for audiences who had fallen in love with the character, particularly over the course of his redemption arc.

The second Loki underwent his own redemption arc, which eventually brought him to the point where he too was willing to make a sacrifice. That decision brought about a bittersweet end to the character's overall arc, raising questions about whether Loki would end after season 2. Nearly a year later, it really does seem like that is the case, as there haven't been any announcements or even mentions of it coming back for a third season in the near future.

Whether it does or not, fans had been hoping to see the God of Mischief reappear in the Avengers movies. With Loki being at the center of the Multiverse Saga now (he is quite literally holding all of the stories together), it is imperative that he plays a role in defending it against whatever threat comes its way. It's good to know that Marvel seem to be thinking the same thing.

You know the drill with Marvel rumors at this point, so it's best to wait before you get too excited about the possibility of Loki returning. In this case, however, they just sound like confirmation to what fans had already been hoping for.
