In last week's match-up of the Bam Smack Pow comic book tournament, I mentioned that popularity hasn’t always determined the winners. The genius bracket may have proven me wrong. However, who’s to say that my opinion is right or wrong? We’ve seen some victories from people who shouldn’t have won. So, maybe it isn’t all about who is more well-known. Take a look at last week's winners and decide for yourself.

  • The Riddler over the Maker (90% to 10%)
  • Reed Richards over Cable (73% to 27%)
  • Cyborg over Ozymanias (82% to 18%)
  • Victor von Doom over Hank Pym (82% to 18%)
  • Black Panther over Mr. Sinister (75% to 25%)
  • Lex Luthor over Blue Marvel (80% to 20%)
  • Mr. Terrific over Amadeus Cho (90% to 10%)
  • Iron Man over Shuri (83% to 17%)

We’ve seen round 1 of the superheroes, supervillains, superhero and supervillain fighters, and geniuses. This bracket is full of people who are too powerful because of their abilities to put anywhere else or they wouldn’t match up until the final rounds.

How were the brackets created?

How are the brackets created? Think of this like a sports tournament. The character at the top fights the character at the bottom, the second takes on second-to-last, and so forth. It should also be noted that being in last place doesn’t automatically mean you’re the worst. Factors such as major victories, power sets, and popularity are all considered.

Why is popularity is a deciding factor in the ranking? It’s simple. A less-than-popular character doesn’t get the same exposure as others. That’s why Wonder Woman is always involved in a major storyline. Not only is she one of the strongest and best fighters in comics, she’s beloved. Take someone like Invincible, who grows into a great hero and one of the strongest in all comics; he hasn’t been around as long as most people on this list. That matters.

Then, and this could be the most important, there’s personality. A character is more than their powerset. Victor von Doom is a genius who should’ve been the Sorcerer Supreme years ago. The problem is his arrogance. That personality trait is why he continues to lose Reed Richards. There are also heroes and anti-heroes like John Constantine. Is he a better magician than Dr. Strange? Probably not, but he’s willing to fight dirty and use other people to win. That has to be considered.

1. John Constantine Vs 16. Johnny Storm

The most underhanded character taking on the guy who can burn as hot as the sun. Johnny Storm has to be ruthless or this is over quickly. John Constantine is too smart and sneaky for the Human Torch to take him lightly.

2. Charles Xavier Vs 15. Shazam

Charles Xavier is the most powerful telepath in the world, but Shazam has the power of a god. However, there’s one huge disadvantage. Shazam has the mind of a teenager despite having Solomon’s wisdom. Is this something that Professor X can capitalize on?

3. Iceman 14. Vs Hyperion

Hyperion’s power level is close to that of Superman. Iceman has frozen Hell and Thor fears what the omega-level mutant can do. This is a closer battle than you think.

4. Reverse Flash Vs 13. Emma Frost

Reverse Flash is among the most creative power users in comic books. Emma Frost’s telepathy has taken down governments. This should come down to Eobard Thawne’s arrogance or Emma’s telepathic speed.

5. Invisible Woman Vs 12. Kang the Conqueror

Kang has the option of using weapons from across the timeline. The Invisible Woman choked out the Hulk. This will be a long fight regardless of who wins.

6. Starfire vs 11. Vision

Vision’s power and intelligence are underrated. Meanwhile, Starfire is one of the most powerful comic book characters. It’ll be interesting to see how fans vote on this one. Honestly, this could be the match of the bracket.

7. Spawn 10. Vs Doctor Fate

This is my pick for the fight of the bracket. Spawn can fight God and Satan. Doctor Fate's powers are beyond comprehension. Which force is more powerful is up to you.

8. Martian Manhunter Vs 9. Atom Eve

Martian Manhunter is powerful enough to take on multiple members of the Justice League. Atom Eve’s strength comes from her imagination and lets her do unbelievable things. Can she generate fire? Does J'onn J'onzz’s telepathy and stealth hold the key to victory?

Who are you voting for? Are you rooting for the most powerful warriors or your favorites? Let us know on the Bam Smack Pow Instagram and Twitter.
