4. Barbie
Barbie is without a doubt one of my favorite movies of the past decade. Director Greta Gerwig's attention to detail is incredible, so combine that with her hilarious and heartfelt script co-written by Noah Baumbach and the fantastic performances, and you get a unicorn of a movie.
Arguably the most empowering movie of 2023, Barbie effortlessly combines lighthearted and silly comedy with themes of existentialism and gender inequality that'll leave you crying when you least expect it. I was truly not expecting this movie to be so impactful when I saw it in theaters opening weekend, but now I can't imagine the past year without it.
Barbie crushed it at the box office, grossing $1.4 billion dollars and setting records, proving female-led movies can absolutely be financial successes.

3. Anatomy of a Fall
The French legal drama Anatomy of a Fall is a can't-miss movie from 2023. The acting, the dialogue, and the unpredictable storyline make for a viewing experience that'll leave you on the edge of your seat, unsure who to root for or what could've happened.
Director Justine Triet is incredibly talented, and her nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards mark a first for a female French creator. Sandra Hüller — who also appears in The Zone of Interest — is amazing as the main character in Anatomy of a Fall, as are the actor who plays her son, 15-year-old Milo Machado-Graner, and Swann Arlaud, who plays her lawyer.
Even the dog in Anatomy of a Fall is great! Messi, the adorable border collie who plays Snoop, won the Palm Dog Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, an honor that was very much deserved.
