Batman: Year One remains one of the Dark Knight’s greatest tales. During this story, Frank Miller tells more than just Bruce Wayne’s first stint as a hero and why he takes the name Batman; he shows James Gordon’s first days as a detective in Gotham City and the first time Selina Kyle became Catwoman. It’s been over three decades since that title was released and now DC Comics is giving fans a new Year One story featuring the Dynamic Duo.

Yes, DC has announced a new 12-issue story titled Batman and Robin: Year One. Writer Mark Waid (Batman/Superman: World’s Finest) and artist Chris Samnee (Daredevil) will team on the story, which will highlight Bruce Wayne taking Dick Grayson into his home and adapting as he becomes his sidekick. During that time, they encounter a crime boss called the General who taking out other mobs. If that isn’t bad enough, the General has a connection to Two-Face.

Mark Waid confirms that the story takes place a couple of months after Bruce adopts Dick Grayson and that "it’s sinking in for Bruce that he has no idea how to be a father to a kid that age." Fans of Batman and Robin know that things eventually work out for the Bruce, Dick, and Alfred. Dick becomes one of the greatest heroes of all-time thanks to how he was raised, going on to become an integral member of the Justice League and a founder of the Teen Titans. However, we also know things weren’t always a smooth ride. Writer Chris Samne points out. “Dick is everything Bruce is not—impetuous, flamboyant, reckless. But he’s also precise; he can stick a landing.”

This series is a brilliant idea. Even if you know the story of Batman and Robin, Batman and Robin: Year One is a new adventure. Like Mark Waid’s series Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, this is a new story from Bruce and Dick’s past that will showcase a different take on an important part of both characters' history, highlighting how they have to learn to trust each other and work together as a team. If you’re unfamiliar with them, this is a great starting point. You can learn something new along with the most veteran comic book readers. Along with Two-Face, we can expect to see classic Batman characters like Catwoman, James Gordon, and more.

Batman and Robin: Year One is set to be published October 16, 2024. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow for a review of the story, how it could affect the present DC Comics continuity, and more.
