DC Comics: Wonder Woman breaks the unbreakable
By Mark Lynch
Tom King’s Wonder Woman should win every comic book award possible. The fights and commentary have been some of the best, but that's only part of what makes this series great. Tom King reminds the world that Diana Prince’s legend is still growing. That was clearer than ever in the most recent installment of the DC Comics series.
After a bar fight (that was likely staged) ends in a murder, America outlaws the women of Themyscira. They were given the option of leaving the United States or being arrested. Some of the Amazons just wanted to live their lives and leave violence behind them. Nevertheless, they were arrested, detained, and sometimes killed if they stayed in America. Wonder Woman took offense to this and set out to make things right.
SGT Steel hires Giganta, Angle Man, Doctor Psycho, Silver Swan, Circe, and Grail to take on Wonder Woman and uses Steve Trevor as bait (see Wonder Woman No. 5 and 6). Readers assumed the plan was to kill Diana, but the leader behind the scenes, The Sovereign, knew they didn’t stand a chance. He wanted them to beat her down enough to capture her. They succeeded in that. Now he was free to brainwash her.
In Wonder Woman No. 8, The Sovereign used the Lasso of Lies to tie Diana to a pole. The Lasso of Lies is an unbreakable Amazon weapon that makes anyone believe what the wielder wishes. The difference here is Wonder Woman isn't just anyone.
The Sovereign recites Bible scriptures that put down women while using the Lasso of Lies, which makes Diana believe she’s a subservient housewife. As she’s submitting, Diana’s mother Hippolyta appears in her mind. Diana says that the Lasso of Lies can’t be broken, but Hippolyta reminds her daughter that she’s always broken the rules and the lasso is no different. Wonder Woman understands her words and breaks free. Now, Diana is unrestrained and there's nothing The Sovereign or his goons can do to stop her.
Wonder Woman’s strength was more than physical. That's how she broke the mental hold the Lasso of Lies had on her. People forget that Diana’s physical strength comes second to her willpower. To this writer, that was more impressive than breaking the Lasso of Lies into pieces.
