4 DC shows that definitely won't be back

A new era is set to begin for DC Studios, but don't expect to see these shows return for new seasons.

Dead Boy Detectives

This may be the one that stings the most. Dead Boy Detectives is, by far, one of the most entertaining new shows of the year. Based on the DC series of the same name, the Netflix series follows ghosts Charles Rowland and Edwin Payne as they navigate the Afterlife, helping other ghosts solve their mysteries. The adventures they faced together across that eight-episode season made for a compelling, enjoyable and downright awesome first season.

The show became an instant fan-favorite, earning itself a devoted fanbase who quickly fell in love with Charles, Edwin, Crystal Palace, Niko Sasaki, Jenny the Butcher, Night Nurse and all the quirky characters that they met throughout the season. And honestly, it's easy to understand why, because Dead Boy Detectives had a charm to it that so few streaming shows are capable of producing. It felt like a throwback to the days of Buffy The Vampire Slayer with its tight concise cases-of-the-week format, the way that it balanced the horror elements with comedy, and the thoughtful exploration of character relationships. There aren't enough shows like that on TV anymore, ensuring that this one stood out from the crowd.

Unfortunately, the overnight, unforeseen success of Baby Reindeer completely overshadowed Dead Boy Detectives' release and Netflix's flawed method of judging a show's success meant that it had an extremely short amount of time to prove itself in. Its cancellation was always going to be the wrong choice for its fans, and it's hard to blame the fans for feeling that way when the show deserved so much better than the treatment it received here.

Edwin and Charles' adventures may carry on off-screen, but the duo will live on in our hearts.
