An exciting rumor and possible truth seem to be gathering traction. Sources note that the coveted director position for the fourth installment of the MCU Spider-Man films could be reaching its end. Reports are gearing toward the idea that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Seven Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton could be in early talks to join and lead the project, according to a new report from Deadline

According to the trade, Sony and Marvel had no comment.

Additional plot details for what looks to be the latest Tom Holland-led Spidey installment are unknown as of now. The trade also briefly alludes that Holland and Zendaya haven’t closed new deals to return.

Still, there have been talks of each being in contact with producers and executives regarding the overall shape and development timeline of the latest Spidey film. The consensus is that both A-listers will be back sooner than anticipated. Reports also indicate that Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will be back as producers. The script will be penned by Chris Mckenna and Erik Sommers, who wrote the first three films.

The trade also confirmed via sources that Cretton and Marvel didn’t make initial responses until further development was provided, showing the script being worked on. The shortlist for who else has been contacted about possible intrigue, helming the latest Marvel feature, wasn’t released.

Other sources confirm via THR that Spider-Man 4 is set to have cameras rolling early next year, no release date was released though.

In addition, the MCU has started to find a balance between critics and the box office as the R-rated Deadpool and Wolverine continue to break records, already far past the $1 billion benchmark. The Shawn Levy action drama holds an impressive 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.

As of now, there is no confirmation to this story, but as further details unfold, it should still yield signs of ample momentum surfacing that Feige and company are getting closer to allowing the fan favorite web-head to return to the silver screen and the confines of the Marvel Studios sandbox.

The next installment of the MCU is set to kick off a few weeks from now with the Kathryn Hahn Agatha All Along Disney+ series, which is slated to premiere with a two-episode series premiere later this month on Sept.18 at 9/8c.  The series is set to consist of nine episodes.
