The Harry Potter series is full of wonderful, kind characters who meet some truly terrible characters, which creates some excellent conflict throughout seven books and eight movies. As soon as we're introduced to the protagonist, Harry Potter, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, J.K. Rowling introduces readers to a few characters fans can't help but dislike. It doesn't get much easier for Harry from that point as he consistently crosses paths with some of the Wizarding World's worst.

We ranked the most disliked characters in the Harry Potter series. Let's get the list started with one of the most complicated in the whole series, Severus Snape.

6. Severus Snape

I know I might get into trouble including Severus Snape on this list, but it's true. For almost all seven books, Snape is bad news! He's a bully, and he's cruel to literal children because he has a bone to pick with the father of one of the students. He's jealous, and he seems to hate his life choices. Later, we understand why, but as mentioned, for almost the entire series, we don't understand why Snape is the way he is or why he does the things he does. It's easy to dislike a character like that when we think it's his hatred toward children driving his actions.

It's important to note, though, that Snape, played by Alan Rickman in the movies, acts the way he does because he does actively loathe Harry and his friends. It's not like this is just some act. Partially, that is true, but it isn't true the whole time, as we see in the memories he shares with Harry of his conversations with Dumbledore. Snape suffered because of what happened to Lily, his choices that made it possible, and that he didn't do more to stop Voldemort from killing her. Then, he took out his frustration with Harry's father, whom Harry reminded him of, consistently for more than half a decade. What a guy, huh?

Snape is the double agent that proves to be the biggest catalyst in The Second Wizarding War. He shows Harry his memories upon his death, and it is the reason why Harry summons the strength to head into the Forbidden Forest and sacrifice himself to save everyone else. That matters, but throughout the series, he's easily one of the most disliked characters up until the end.
