A while back, I questioned whether we will have a new team book of The Ultimates (Earth-1610’s re-imaging of the Avengers) in this new Ultimate Universe (Earth-6160). That has finally been answered by Marvel themselves following the release of the titles Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Black Panther, and Ultimate X-Men.

The Ultimates Vol. 2 No.1 will be written by Children of the Vault’s Deniz Camp and drawn by up-and-coming art superstar, Juan Frigeri, known for his work on Invincible Iron Man.

In 2002, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s The Ultimates was launched. This wowed readers and influenced their “Ultimate take” on the Avengers across media and most prominently the MCU. Now in 2024, Camp and Frigeri intend to do this once more which the original Ultimate Marvel line did over two decades before. “The new Ultimate line is the most exciting superhero comics event in years, and it’s humbling to be a part of it,” Camp stated.

"“We are reinventing these classic characters and archetypes to be surprising and vital as when they were first introduced. Our Ultimates is an evolution not just of the Avengers, but of the whole superhero team concept, from the grand and operatic to the small and personal, The Ultimates will feel like no Avengers or Ultimates comic ever before! That’s our ambition, anyway; tune in to find out if we succeed.”"

What is to look forward to in The Ultimates?

Before this writer shares a counter-agreement to this statement, I would like to point out you will be able to read a preview of The Ultimates super team in Ultimate Universe/Spider-Man No.1 Free Comic Book Day again with the Spidey portion written by Zeb Wells and art by Ryan Stegman.

The last we saw of The Ultimates before the unrelated revival in the Ultimate Invasion miniseries by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch, was in Spider-Men II #5 where it was revealed that Earth-1610 is very much still in existence. The last title ever to be published depicting The Ultimates was Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates by Hickman and Esad Ribic. Sam Humphries then Joshua Hale Fialkov took over writing duties and various artists were on the title including Luke Ross, Dale Eaglesham, Immortal Hulk’s Joe Bennett, and Carmine Di Giandomenico. It lasted just 30 issues.

Expect The Ultimates No.1 to drop in comic shops June 5, 2024.

From what Camp stated, it sounds as if he is trying to redefine The Ultimates in a new era for readers in 2024 and beyond, bringing some of the superhero elements but spinning it in a new angle (presumably the team aspect) but interpreted in such a way that has room for interpersonal relations between these characters.

My question is how are they going to surpass what made Earth-1610’s Ultimates so great? And if they are going to face the Maker’s Council, they are going to need a Hulk... Shulkie, anyone?
