7. Titans

"Loose adaptation" truly couldn't capture just how loosely Titans adapts the Batman lore, but it does its own thing pretty well nonetheless - even if it did take it a while to get there. The show debuted on the DC Universe streaming service back in 2018 and it got off to a bit of a rough start, thanks in no small part to a questionably edgy first trailer (seriously, what is with those trailers?).

The first season of Titans wasn't at all what you'd expect. It was dark, moody, violent, and uncomfortable at times. Oh yeah, and there was a lot of swearing. Like a lot.

Nevertheless, Titans persisted. It didn't exactly lose its mature tone and penchant for violence, but it did learn to balance it out much better, with its larger cast, youthful characters, and more uplifting tone in later seasons really elevating it to the greatness fans had been longing for it to reach. The show's greatest asset was the core team of heroes, and whenever it leaned into that camaraderie, it shined. Whenever it leaned into the trauma, it struggled.

Brenton Thwaites and Anna Diop led an ensemble cast extremely well, elevating Titans on its darker days and delivering even more so on its best. If only we had gotten to see the Titans' story continue on past season 4, because that final season was some of the show's best work yet, and it deserved at least one more season to show us that it could maintain that high.

Titans was an odd series, but an unusually fun, epic, and beautiful one, too.
