Every DC Comics movie ever, ranked from worst to best
9. Shazam!
It's quite odd to say that the DCEU started having a bit more fun after the colossal failure of Justice League but that was indeed the case, with the solid fantasy Aquaman giving us underwater adventure for the ages and the beloved Birds of Prey focusing on a more grounded character(s)-driven story. But it found its chance to have the most fun with Shazam!.
I was looking forward to Shazam! prior to its release, don't get me wrong, but I couldn't have dreamed that it would deliver to such a high standard that it outshined so many movies in the genre focused on much more famous characters. It was a pretty magical experience, and it all had to do with the script's focus on family as a driving force, specifically found family. Billy Batson didn't know what it was like to have a family that cared for him, until he found one in the most unlikely of places.
Shazam! is perhaps the most uplifting movie in DC's entire catalogue. It was enhanced by its festive setting, which gave it a nostalgic almost '90s feeling; it worked for it, too, allowing it to deliver the perfect holiday treat. It's fun for the whole family, and the movie's appeal will likely outlast the DCEU as a concept. What a surprise!
