Fast & Furious director in the running to direct Spider-Man 4

Amidst the speculative disagreements regarding the creative direction between Sony/Marvel's Spider-Man 4 in the MCU, the Star Trek Beyond director has been in the running to helm the film.

With rumors circling around between Sony and Marvel Studios regarding the direction of Spider-Man 4, some recent updates have come out within the entertainment space, which ties in with the actor who portrays Michelle Jones.

Turns out that Spider-Man 4 could possibly be shooting a bit sooner than anticipated sometime during the fall of this year, around September or October 2024, to be precise. And yes, with one of the directors of the Fast & Furious franchise in the running to direct.

After news chimed in that Euphoria was put on hold for its third season, according to Hollywood insider, film critic, and scooper Jeff Sneider, from the latest edition of his newsletter (H/T: ComicBookMovie.com) he believes this is down to Zendaya and her commitment to the role of MJ.

This leads us to the director in question (which may have spoiled the mystery due to my subheading), Justin Lin as a potential candidate to helm Spider-Man 4. Another filmmaker rumored to be in the running was Drew Goddard.

While not officially declared by either Sony or Marvel or even covered by the trades, it is listed on IMDB that Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are the scribes working on the sequel to No Way Home. Back in May 2023, it was confirmed by producer Amy Pascal that Spider-Man 4 will resume development once the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike is resolved.

Since then, there has been no official statement from either studio. For Lin to be director it would be interesting, he is capable of handling pre-existing I.P. like 2016’s Star Trek Beyond which grossed $343.3 million against a $185 million production budget and scored positive reviews by critics.

Lin can be described as a studio director-by-committee who can helm a project by what the final cut from a producer and studio executive wants though not what the end product creatively needs. Is this the kind of director that this franchise needs right now?

Please note things can change and due to the nature of the studio system, it is not definite but we may have to wait at least three months from now to see how things play out though one thing is for certain: Jon Watts – the original director of the Homecoming saga – is not expected to return.
