"True love" might not be one of the first phrases you think of when you look back at Game of Thrones, but there's no denying the series did feature a handful of lovable couples. Whether you rooted for them to be endgame against all odds or just admired their dynamic, the characters of the show formed complicated and rich romances, on top of all of the battles and political maneuvering. All men must fall in love, right? How do you say that in High Valyrian?

In honor of Valentine's Day, we're looking back at the couples on Game of Thrones who deserved better. Whether their romance was cut short by death or because of their different backgrounds, these pairings certainly had bad luck — or you might even say they were doomed from the start.

5. Catelyn and Ned Stark

It might not have been love at first sight for Catelyn and Ned Stark, but they ended up having a great relationship — especially compared to other couples in Game of Thrones.

The biggest issue they had was that Catelyn believed Ned cheated on her and fathered a son, his "bastard" Jon Snow. But of course, as we know, that didn't actually happen. Ned was incredibly honorable and he was only doing what he thought was right, which was to raise Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen's child as his own.

Catelyn and Ned compromised for one another and always put their duty first, making for a pretty solid relationship. That all ended, however, with Ned's murder in the first season. Catelyn wasn't too far behind, being killed in season 3. The worst!
