Image Comics will release Old Dog: Operations this September
By Mark Lynch
You're missing out if you’re a comic book fan and don’t read Image comics. They’ve published some of your favorite properties like Invincible, The Walking Dead, Spawn, and more. Recently, they’ve been killing it with the Energon Universe (a crossover of G.I. Joe and Transformer properties). Those are only the ones that have movies or shows. Others deserve recognition like Old Dog written and drawn by Declan Shalvey (Thundercats and Deadpool Vs. Old Man Logan).
Old Dog: Redact is appropriately named and follows the elder Jack Lynch. No one likes him and it doesn’t help that one of his operations got a bunch of people killed. After an explosion left him with superhuman abilities, the grizzled Jack (codename, Rottweiler) works for a clandestine agency named Black Circle with his daughter (codename Retriever).
Old Dog: Redact becomes a deep story with enough action and quips to keep everyone entertained. Sure, Jack Lynch is a bit of a jerk, but it’s not all his fault. As the story goes on, you see that there's a reason he's a grumpy and disgruntled agent.
There are secrets to his past that aren't revealed until the end. When you find them out, you'll sympathize with what he's going through and want more from this universe. It's understandable that Image Comics would bring this series back with new writers and artists.
Old Dog: Operations One-Shot will feature short stories with the creator (Declan Shalvey), Charles Soule, Leonardo Romero, Matias Bergara, Alex Paknadel, and more. Shalvey is proud of this project saying,
"CreatingOld Dog at Image has been the highlight of my professional career. Not just the opportunity to fully tell stories of my own, to develop and experiment with my craft, but also now to have established a sandbox where I can invite other creators to play in. I cannot believe how lucky I am to have such accomplished storytellers joining me to tell some Old Dog tales."
After the way Old Dog Volume 1 ended, I can’t wait for the series to continue. Readers need to know what’s next for the character, his daughter, and the full extent of his abilities. I’d like to say more, but you’re better off reading the series.
Old Dog: Redact One collects issues #1-6 of Old Dog and is available now at local comic book shops, independent bookstores, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Indigo, and Waterstones.
Old Dog: Operations One-Shot will be published on September 18, 2024. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow for more as the information comes out.
