Invincible creator Robert Kirkman reveals that no, that wasn’t a Walking Dead crossover

“I should have had them shooting lasers out of their eyes or something,” Kirkman joked.

In this week’s episode of Invincible, Season 2, Episode 6, “It’s Not That Simple” – and spoilers past this point – we get the return of the villainous Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) as he makes his way from alternate Earth to alternate Earth – including one filled with zombies. And in case you were wondering, no, we didn’t just get a Walking Dead crossover.

“No, I specifically had them speaking and saying ‘brains’ so that it would be clear that it wasn't the Walking Dead universe, but I should have done more,” Invincible creator Robert Kirkman told Bam Smack Pow. “I should have had them shooting lasers out of their eyes or something because I think people still think it's the Walking Dead universe.”

In case you’re not totally clear on the backstory here, Robert Kirkman is the co-creator of both The Walking Dead and Invincible. Beyond writing every issue for both of the comic books, he’s also an Executive Producer on both TV shows and the co-showrunner for Invincible. Not only that but Invincible is practically littered with voice cast from The Walking Dead, including Steven Yeun as the title character, Invincible, to Ross Marquand (who played Aaron on TWD and provides multiple voices for Invincible), Lauren Cohan, Khary Payton, Sonequa Martin-Green, Lennie James, Michael Cudlitz… The list goes on.

The point here being that doing some sort of The Walking Dead/Invincible crossover doesn’t seem too far beyond what could happen, particularly with Kirkman’s Skybound studios involved in both shows. That said, TWD is squarely an AMC franchise, while Invincible is Prime Video: the rights there could be tricky.

So if anything, Levy crossing through a zombie apocalypse is a little wink to Kirkman’s past, which includes both TWD and spearheading the Marvel Zombies franchise for Marvel Comics. But it’s not a crossover. Yet.

Invincible streams on Thursdays at 3 AM ET / Midnight PT on Prime Video.
