We always knew the odds of Stranger Things season 5 arriving in 2024 were slim, but now we know for certain that the wait for the final season of Netflix’s biggest series is going to be quite a long one.
Stranger Things’ fifth and final season will not be arriving on Netflix until 2025, and this is no longer speculation. Deadline has confirmed Stranger Things is one of nearly a dozen massive Netflix originals that will not be coming until 2025, with a 2024 release date officially ruled out for the last batch of episodes in the show that put Netflix on the map.
With season 5 pushed to 2025, this means fans will have to wait three years between seasons of the show and there is a chance this could prove to be the longest wait between new seasons of the show. 34 months passed between when season 3 was released on July 4, 2019, and when the first part of season 4 arrived on May 27, 2022.
Stranger Things season 5 delay explained
So why is Stranger Things being pushed back to 2025? Well, the answer is honestly more simple than you might think. Basically, the show was delayed due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes which pushed back the formal start of production on the final season.
Instead of being able to begin work on the new season in 2023 as planned, production on the final season was forced to hit pause during the duration of the strikes. This meant that the Duffer brothers could not work with their writers on crafting the final episodes, nor could the cast begin filming which was a major setback for the show.
The good news is that production on season 5 began in January and Netflix is making the show a top priority with filming officially underway on the final episodes. Filming is slated to take place over the next several months and then the show’s extensive VFX work will begin as the creative team works to put the finishing touches on the episodes.
Hopefully, there will be no further delays which will allow Netflix to debut the fifth season sometime in Summer 2025.
