J.K. Simmons finally settles who would win in a fight: Omni-Man, or the Yellow M&M?
It’s a debate almost as old as the Earth itself: who would win in a fight, Omni-Man from Invincible, or the Yellow M&M? Friendships and relationships have ended trying to decide this one, and now, thankfully, we’ve gotten the most important person in this ongoing conundrum to weigh in on the answer: J.K. Simmons, the voice of both characters.
Best known for his roles such as J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man movies, Fletcher the abusive jazz teacher in Whiplash, among dozens of other parts, Simmons is also a prolific voice actor. He’s done the voice of Tenzin in The Legend of Korra, General Ketheric Thorm in Baldur’s Gate 3, and of course Pig Toddler in Infinity Train.
You’d think with such a distinctive voice, Simmons would be pigeonholed into one type of role. And he sort of is with Invincible’s Omni-Man, a gruff-talking dad figure with an edge to him who serves as both an emotional anchor and pressure point for the series’s title character, voiced by Steven Yeun.
But he’s also been the voice of the Yellow M&M, paired with actor Billy West as the Red M&M, for decades at this point. The dumb, earnest M&M was even partially based on him physically because Simmons’s body contains one, large peanut. Just kidding, but in an interview with Live with Kelly & Ryan he did admit M&M based the head shape partially on his bald pate.
So with that in mind, when I had the chance to hop on the phone with Simmons to discuss the new season of Invincible, I needed him to finally settle this debate that definitely happens a lot and is not a thing I just made up, once and for all.
Herewith is our unexpurgated conversation:
Alex Zalben: I'm going to have to let you go in one second. So a real quick one to end here with. Who do you think would win in a fight? Omni-Man or the Yellow–
J.K. Simmons: Omni-Man.
Oh, I was going to say Omni-Man–
Oh, you were going to make a funny joke and I screwed it up.
I was, wait, I'll finish it up. Omni-Man or the Yellow M&M?
Okay. Well, the answer to that question is, it's really, I think it would go down to the wire.
It would. I think the Yellow M&M could take it. That guy is unstoppable, honestly.
I mean just pure sweetness, you know? It's a powerful force.
All right, thank you for letting me get my joke question out. I appreciate it.
So there you have it: both myself and J.K. Simmons, with much cajoling on my end, have agreed. The Yellow M&M could beat Omni-Man in a fight. You can now get back to being friends and married and whatever, without fear. You’re welcome.
Invincible streams Thursdays at 3 am ET / Midnight PT on Prime Video. M&Ms are available pretty much everywhere.
