Green Lantern has had an amazing 80 years since his arrival on the DC Comics scene back in 1940. There have been multiple heroes to hold the mantle over the years and all of them have made a memorable impression, including going up against some of DC's most evil and creative villains. The Green Lantern rogues gallery is special, because it includes a mix of both cosmic villains from space, as well as villains from Earth.

With that in mind, and the upcoming HBO series Lanterns that is set to be a part of the DC Universe, let's look back through the Lantern archives and pick some villains that should be a part of the much-anticipated TV show.

Sinestro

The most famous of all of Green Lantern's enemies, the sinister Sinestro has been a threat since the Silver Age of Comic Books. Sinestro, a former Green Lantern who traded in his status as a Lantern to become a Yellow Lantern - one who opposes the Green Lantern Corps - has both a cosmic and personal battle with Green Lantern.

All this and more makes Sinestro the most essential villain for Green Lantern, and a perfect choice for a potential Big Bad of the upcoming series. If Lanterns truly wants to show us all of the Lanterns' story, then Sinestro should be an important part of its narrative.

Sonar

Sonar, who has gone up against Green Lantern and the Justice League Europe may seem an obscure choice, but there's a lot to like about him. Sonar is a truly human villain, who invented his own supervillain weapons and technology, based on manipulating sound. Furthermore, the character is a cunning and powerful foe, and one who could ground the human Lanterns to their home planet.

If the series wanted to spotlight a villain with real potential that isn't as well-known to mainstream audiences, then Sonar would be a perfect choice.

Evil Star

Evil Star may look human, but in reality he is an alien destroyer. Destruction and mayhem are his only goals. That makes him an imposing threat and one that could serve any Green Lantern adaptation well.

However, this is also a villain who could provide a lot of comedy to the series, as seen in Grant Morrison's The Green Lantern. Morrison's depiction of Evil Star is a cartoonishly evil villain, one who is over the top and comical. And perhaps the show could benefit from one or two characters like that.

The Black Hand

William Hand has been one of the most important DC villains since the 2000s began. Originally, he was a tech based villain, with appearances in comics such as Green Lantern/Green Arrow. He eventually became the Black Hand, leader of the Black Lantern Corps and servant of Nekron, the god of death.

The Black Hand is a threatening and cosmically powerful threat, one who could easily be the result of multiple seasons of build up.

Atrocitus

Leader of the Red Lantern Corps and ruler of the planet Ryut, Atrocitus is a true enemy of the Green Lantern Corps, and especially their leaders, the Guardians of the Universe. Atrocitus is the embodiment of rage, seeking revenge on the Guardians for the destruction of his planet, Ryut.

Atrocitus is the most devoted enemy of the Green Lantern Corps, and would be an amazing choice to appear in the upcoming series.

The Green Lantern series may be one of the greatest DC series ever, Green Lantern is a character full of possibilities, from Earth to the multiverse. There is no shortage of heroes, villains, and planets for the Green Lantern Corps to explore.
