Disney Plus' Loki will reportedly return; comeback sooner than you think

It sounds like we haven't seen the last of the Loki we met on the Disney Plus series. The character's return is reportedly closer than you think.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a character more popular than Loki. The Trickster from Asgard has been amassing a legion of stans since he debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011's Thor, showcasing how fans have an affinity for a good villain. And Loki is the best of the villains, thanks in no small part to Tom Hiddleston's charming performance. He's been truly divine in the role and there was no greater example of that than when he got his own spotlight in Disney Plus series Loki.

As of yet, the project is the only of the live-action MCU shows to officially get a second season, and it isn't hard to see why. Loki was a story about its title character's redemption as he finally figured out that what he thought he wanted and what he actually wanted weren't the same thing. And that resulted in him asking himself if he was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the people he loved.

While the future of the show remains uncertain, a new report has indicated that the version of the character we met on the Disney Plus series will return in the near future - and here's when we can seemingly expect that to be.

Disney Plus' version of Loki could return in Avengers 5 and 6

According to a new report from The Cosmic Circus' Marvel insider Alex Perez, Loki and Sylvie will play a role in both Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. The report does state that it wouldn't be wise to speculate how big a role they might have as the availability of actors Tom Hiddleston and Sophia Di Martino could vary depending on production or post-production, but it does add that their comebacks is "an idea that’s definitely going to come to fruition".

While Loki has appeared in multiple MCU movies before (including multiple Avengers movies), it would only be the second time that this particular variation of the character appeared on the silver screen. He made his debut in a cameo appearance in 2019's Avengers: Endgame when The Avengers went back to 2012 and attempted to take the Tesseract, inadvertently allowing the Trickster to abscond with the Infinity Stone into the timestream. This kickstarted the events of Loki as it was that version of the character who starred in the Disney Plus show. Now that the series has seemingly ended, it would be pretty fitting for him to return in another Avengers movie.

The idea of the pair appearing in Avengers 5 isn't completely out of the blue as fans speculated that the God of Mischief at least could return in the film due to Loki's importance to the Multiverse Saga. It was in the show that we first met a version of new big bad Kang The Conqueror (named He Who Remains) and it essentially started a chain reaction that introduced multiple Kangs into the franchise.

If it does mark the official movie debut of the Disney Plus Loki, it will undoubtedly have some major repercussions on the timeline. The question is: What kind of role could Loki 2.0. play in the movies?

The God of Stories on the big screen?

When we last saw Loki, he decided to sacrifice a life with Sylvie and his new friends at the Time Variance Authority in order to save the branched timelines in the TVA itself, paying homage to Yggdrasil by forming a tree of life out of those timelines and selflessly choosing to remain in the midst of them to allow them all to live. Loki had the throne he thought he wanted all his life, but at the cost of being able to live a life; and that was a price that he was willing to pay to give his loved ones the chance of living theirs.

With Loki watching over the timelines, a return in at least one of the upcoming Avengers movies seems logical. The question is: How could it happen, and what would that mean for the timelines he is overseeing? Could he end up facing off against Kang the Conqueror to ensure that they continue or will we simply catch up with him in his current location?

The other exciting aspect of Loki's potential return in Avengers 5 is that Chris Hemsworth is expected to reprise his role as Thor in that movie, meaning that we might finally see that long-awaited reunion between the two brothers. The original Loki perished at the hands of Thanos after attempting to protect Thor, but the God of Thunder is unaware that there is another version of his beloved brother being equally as selfless out there in the timeline. Their inevitable reunion is one that fans have been waiting an incredibly long time for, and it will no doubt be worth the wait whenever it does happen.

As with all Marvel rumors and reports, it's best to wait for official confirmation from Marvel Studios about when - or if - Loki and Sylvie will appear in the franchise again, but the chances of them returning in one of the Avengers movies seems very, very likely. And as we continue to embrace the Multiverse Saga and all of the possibilities it possesses, it's truly awesome to see it embrace the characters established in the Disney Plus shows on the big screen, too.
