Marvel and DC Comics are two sides of the same coin; two parallels in a world of storytelling that have entertained readers for close to a century. When the characters in those comic books were adapted onto screen, they began to entertain much more mainstream audiences, which just furthered their legacies.

Nowadays, fans like to compare the two all the time, particularly their big screen ventures. While Marvel is definitely in the lead at the moment simply due to the success of its Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC will look to catch up in the coming year when it launches its own live-action DC Universe.

Given the two companies' notoriety in the comic book world and their dominance in the cinematic field, actors from one of the franchises tend to jump to the other from time-to-time. Look no further than the likes of Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Idris Elba, and Ryan Reynolds.

Now, one of Marvel's most famous villains has revealed how he always longed to play a certain DC character.

Vincent D'Onofrio always wanted to play Swamp Thing

Vincent D'Onofrio has revealed which character he would love to play if he wasn't already a regular part of the Marvel universe, telling audiences at Dragon Con that he was always a fan of Swamp Thing and always wanted to play him. The video, which comes from Twitter/X user Everything_DCU, sees the Marvel star discussing his favorite comic book characters from whenever he was growing up, revealing that he was a fan of Captain America, Spider-Man, Swamp Thing, and Batman. He then added that he always wanted to play Swamp Thing.

The actor is, of course, best known for portraying Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk in Netflix's Daredevil series for three seasons. His nuanced, imposing performance has received critical acclaim and is highly-regarded as one of the best performances as a live-action villain of all time. He has since been welcomed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first reprising the role in Disney Plus series Hawkeye before going on to have a more significant role in spinoff Echo. He will now return full-time in Marvel's new Daredevil series Daredevil: Born Again.

The irony is that DC Studios does have a Swamp Thing movie on its calendar. The studio, which is overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, will relaunch the DC Universe on the screen, kicking things off with animated series Creature Commandos and live-action movie Superman. But a Swamp Thing movie is on the calendar too, which is expected to take the DCU into horror territory. James Mangold is currently attached to direct.

Needless to say, D'Onofrio would be an inspired choice to play the titular creature, as he is one of the finest actors of his generation. As we saw him do on Daredevil, he is more than capable of bringing larger-than-life personalities to life and taking on ambitious storylines. HIs performances are full of nuance and gravitas, which is exactly what the role of the tragic Swamp Thing would require.

The character was recently adapted in the critically-acclaimed big-budget 2019 TV series for DC Universe streaming service. Although it only lasted one season, Swamp Thing has lived on as the definitive adaptation of the character, with a TV debut on The CW in 2020 reviving interest in it. The movie will no doubt have a tough task of living up to the high standard set by that show, but a compelling performance from an actor the caliber of D'Onofrio would certainly help with that. So if DC is listening, it might be worth seeing if they could make this a reality.

Could D'Onofrio join the ranks of actors to appear in both Marvel and DC productions? I know the fans would love to see it!
