Robert Downey Jr. is one of the most recognizable Marvel stars of all time. He's largely responsible for laying the groundwork for what became the MCU back in 2008 with Iron Man. In the film, Downey Jr. starred as Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man. Downey Jr. also appeared The Incredible Hulk, also released in 2008, in an uncredited role, which started to connect the stories of the Marvel heroes.
We all know what happened next. The MCU exploded with the release of The Avengers, and the rest is history. Tony Stark plays a significant role in the whole MCU. He appears in six more movies following The Avengers, but it's in Phase Three where Tony Stark and Iron Man take things to a whole new level of popularity and fame. We see Tony go toe-to-toe with Captain America in Captain America: Civil War, which was set up by the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. He also pops up as the mentor to Peter Parker and Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Stark's contribution to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame can't be overstated. While the film includes all of the MCU's important heroes and stars, those movies are about Tony Stark's arc in the MCU. Everything in those movies has been foreshadowed and hinted at in the many movies before, and it's all about Tony growing from the selfish billionaire playboy into the one who would sacrifice it all. It's perfect in so many ways!
