Deadpool and Wolverine’s relationship is complicated. Once upon a time, they hated each other. After that, the disdain was one-sided. Eventually, Wade Wilson became a better person but Logan couldn’t forgive Wade as he had hurt a lot of Wolverine's friends. Eventually, he understood that he and Wade were alike. Both of them were tortured souls on a path to redemption. They may not be friends, but they respect each other.

With the newest Deadpool and Wolverine trailer debuting, fans are excited to see that relationship come to life on the big screen. However, they will also want to know about Logan and Wade’s history in Marvel Comics. These seven comic books are the perfect place to start. They range from their blood-fueled beginnings to their current love/hate friendship.

Wolverine No. 88

Writer: Larry Hama

Back when Deadpool killed anyone he was paid to he ran into Wolverine. At the time, Logan’s healing factor was weaker than normal. It was the wrong time for him to run into Wade. Their first fight left Wolverine near dead. When they fought again (later in this issue) Logan had help. Deadpool saw the odds and escaped.

Deadpool No. 27

Writer: Joe Kelly

Wade Wilson was at a place in his life where he needed clarity on his past. A villain named Dr. Bong (seriously) said a fight would help Deadpool clear his mind. This leads Wade to find and fight Logan. Wolverine opposed it until Deadpool uppercuts Kitty Pryde (he did and said “Shoryuken”). Of course, that sends Wolverine into a rage, and the two fight. The funny part is the battle was exactly what Wade needed, as he gets the answers he needs.

Wolverine Origins

Writer: Daniel Way

Deadpool had become more of an anti-hero than a villain at this point (read Cable and Deadpool to see how that happened). However, Wade couldn’t get over his jealousy of Wolverine. Because of this, Deadpool accepts a contract to kill Logan. This story has a ton of elaborate plans by Wade where Logan is abused and embarrassed.

Uncanny X-Force

Writer: Rick Remender

Cyclops disbanded X-Force after Hope Summers returned from the future (X-Men: Second Coming). Logan knew they were still needed and refused to put younger X-Men in danger. Instead, he created a team of veteran heroes. Among them was Deadpool.

Wolverine still hated Deadpool, but he needed him. Along the way, Logan learned more about Wade. For example, Wade never cashed the checks to be on the team. He was helping because he believed in the job. That was the moment when Logan started to look at Wade differently.

Deadpool: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Writer: Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn

This is the best Deadpool story ever. I won’t get into the story itself because it’s worth reading. Saying too much will ruin it. However, I’ll say this: This is where Wolverine and Wade became friendly. Logan was there for a defining moment in Wade’s life. Tragic, but defining nonetheless.

Death of Wolverine: Deadpool and Captain America

Writer: Gerry Duggan

Wolverine was dead in this issue, but it’s important to the Wade and Wolverine story. An elderly Steve Rogers and Deadpool went on a mission to retrieve Logan’s DNA from A.I.M. After they succeeded, Wade sat with the DNA. He debated on destroying the DNA or bringing his friend back. It was a nice moment that Logan would never know about.

Wolverine Nos. 20-23

Writer: BenjaminPercy

This is the newest story in the Wade and Wolverine saga. This wasn’t a deep tale for the two of them. That was reserved for Danger. Nevertheless, Wolverine and Deadpool remind readers that Logan will always look at Deadpool as a degenerate. This results in Logan cutting Deadpool in half and shoving him through prison cell bars. Ultimately, Wolverine realizes he's wrong and invites Deadpool to join X-Force.

A Bonus One - Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII

This summer, Marvel Comics will bring the Best there is and the Merc with a Mouth together again. The series will be written by classic Deadpool writer Joe Kelly with art by iconic Wolverine artist Adam Kubert. With the knowledge these two have for the characters, there’s no way this will fail.

A perfect companion to read during the season that Deadpool and Wolverine will be released in theaters.
