Fan-favorite Avenger to reportedly return for solo MCU project
Marvel Studios has brought us some of its very best adventures on the small screen. One of the most exciting aspects of the Disney Plus shows is that they often give characters who were underappreciated in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies the spotlight they deserve. We've seen this with characters such as Wanda and Vision in WandaVision, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Clint Barton in Hawkeye.
That trend has continued through to the movies in Phases Four and Five, too, as Sam Wilson will headline his own movie in Captain America: Brave New World, while Bucky Barnes appears alongside a lot of other underrated MCU characters in the upcoming Thunderbolts* movie.
Now, it sounds like another beloved hero; one of the biggest fan-favorite characters in the MCU may finally get the chance to headline his own project, too. And honestly, if the reports are true, it's about time.
Wong rumored to be getting his own MCU Disney Plus series
According to Marvel scooper MyTimeToShineHello, a Wong solo project is in development at Marvel Studios. The report doesn't outright state whether it's a movie or a TV series as of yet, but fans are convinced that it will be the latter as a Strange Academy Disney Plus series has been rumored for some time now; this could be the Wong project in question.
A movie or series focused on the character could be a unique project given how intriguing (and still very mysterious) a character Wong is. If it were to be a Strange Academy series, it would give him a chance to lead a new ensemble of sorcerers, perhaps setting the stage for their involvement in a major battle against a formidable threat (Dormammu anyone?). We've seen how powerful an ally the sorcerers can be when they aided The Avengers in their battle against Thanos.
Strange Academy was a Marvel Comics series based on a fictional school which Doctor Stephen Strange started to train young sorcerers. If Marvel Studios is adapting that for the MCU, it would likely be Wong acting as the teacher now that he is technically Sorcerer Supreme and Doctor Strange has his own film series.
Wong is portrayed by actor Benedict Wong and he has become a major fan-favorite since his 2016 debut, with audiences loving his reserved sass, his unintentionally funny lines of dialogue, and his perpetual frustration at Doctor Strange. Initially a loyal sorcerer and ally to The Ancient One, he became a teacher for her successor Doctor Strange before eventually ascending to the role of Sorcerer Supreme himself (due to a technicality as Doctor Strange was blipped out of existence for five years).
He made his first MCU appearance in Doctor Strange before going on to reprise the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. He has since become a staple of the Multiverse Saga, appearing in Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and voicing alternate versions of the character in animated series What If...?.
Like Strange, Wong might not consider himself an official Avenger as the sorcerers tend to operate outside of the laws of man, but he certainly is a part of the team, working regularly with them to help establish order after teaming up to take down Thanos. Given how important a part of Phase Four the character became, we wouldn't be too surprised if the rumors of him starring in his own project are true. Honestly, given how much the fans love him, it's pretty surprising that one hasn't been officially announced yet.
As always, it's important to take Marvel rumors with a pinch of salt (especially with San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner), but with the "Wong Academy" rumors continuing to come up over the past few years, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if this one eventually turns out to be true, especially given how awesome the concept is.
Please Marvel, the Wong Cinematic Universe needs this.
