One of the greatest aspects of Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga is that it has allowed the Marvel Cinematic Universe to place the spotlight on some of the franchise's most underrated or overlooked characters. That was clear through its very first Disney Plus shows WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki; all of which focused on beloved, supporting characters from the MCU, ensuring that they would forever be seen as main event players going forward.

The first of those shows suggested that Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, would be a major focus in the Multiverse Saga and she was right out of the gate. It set the stage for what fans were hoping would be that long-awaited (and long-rumored) Scarlet Witch movie, but the character ultimately returned for what appeared to be her premature grand finale in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

However, a new report suggests that Wanda will be back in the spotlight soon enough.

Marvel reportedly looking for a director for Scarlet Witch movie

According to Marvel scooper MyTimeToShineHello, Marvel Studios has begun the process of looking for someone to direct a movie centered on the Scarlet Witch, starring Elizabeth Olsen. While the studio itself has yet to offer any kind of confirmation on this, this new rumor has seemingly cemented the years of speculation that a Scarlet Witch movie is indeed in the works.

If true, it will undoubtedly come as music to the ears of fans who felt that the character was mishandled in her most recent appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. After seemingly holding herself accountable for her actions in Westview, Wanda was corrupted by the Darkhold and turned into the film's villain, undoing much of the character development that WandaVision did. She then sacrificed herself in the end to atone for her sins, which left fans wondering if that was the last they would see of her.

If a Scarlet Witch movie truly is in the works, it would be Marvel's chance to right that wrong, giving her the spotlight she deserves without sacrificing the character development she underwent by shoehorning her into somebody else's movie as a villain. It would also explore the rich and complex character that she is, while also showcasing her incredible levels of power that few can compete with.

Where a Scarlet Witch movie could take place

Marvel Studios has a lot of releases on the horizon, but they haven't been as forthcoming about what some of the titles are. We know everything set to release in Phase Five, but only a number of Phase Six films have been confirmed, meaning that there is space on the calendar for a Scarlet Witch movie should Marvel really be making one.

This is something that scooper HolyField News has reported, revealing that the film could be one of the Phase Six titles and that could come out before Avengers: Secret Wars. With rumors that the upcoming sixth Avengers movie could be split into two parts to accommodate its larger-than-life plot, it's clear that the MCU's roster of films in Phase Six is constantly in flux. And with that, it wouldn't be surprising if the Scarlet Witch movie was released before one of those films.

Wanda seemingly sacrificed herself in Doctor Strange 2, with fans distraught at the possibility of that being the last we saw of her. However, it seemed unlikely given the character's popularity with audiences, so there was always the hope that she could return. Better yet, there have been rumors that her redemption could continue in the form of teaming up with the Avengers to battle a being as powerful as Kang the Conqueror. If that is indeed the case, it would explain why the Scarlet Witch movie is rumored to be released between Avengers 5 and Avengers 6.

As for when the project could be confirmed; HolyField News speculates that D23 is when the announcement could come, with Marvel Studios potentially opting to save most of its biggest announcements for then (potentially having a more lowkey San Diego Comic-Con presentation as a result).

We'll have to wait and see if the rumors of the Scarlet Witch project are true, but the thought of Wanda making her return on the silver screen is incredibly exciting. Here's hoping that Marvel confirms that they are indeed working on such a project in the near future.
