Marvel releases cryptic X-Men news
By Mark Lynch
Keeping up with Marvel Comics’ X-Men is a full-time job. It always seems like something is going on with them. It doesn’t help that there’s always half a dozen X-titles in circulation. It didn’t get better after the Hellfire Gala. In fact, things became more hectic.
Orchis killed human diplomats and blamed the mutants of Krakoa. Since then, mutants have been outlawed and hunted all over the world. Orchis went as far as to have them attacked on Arakko as well (read X-Men Red for that story). Of course, the X-Men fought in various Marvel Comics.
Iceman continued to help people all over the United States (Astonishing Iceman by Steve Orlando), Wolverine took out Orchis all over the world (Wolverine by Benjamin Percy), and some of them joined Captain America's Unity Squad (Uncanny Avengers by Gerry Duggan).
With the Fall of X storyline in full swing, it’s almost time for the heroes to either defeat Orchis or fall. According to Marvel’s social media, the newest X-Men era will begin in July.
Other than new titles, no one knows what this means. Judging by the logo, the X-Men could be going back to their roots. That means the Charles Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters could be reopened. It makes sense. The world reacted negatively to Krakoa. They felt like the mutants abandoned them. This has provoked a lot of fear around the world. This is why it was easy for Orchis to take over. However, mutants haven’t been treated fairly by most humans. Leaving was the right idea.
If Marvel Comics does bring the old ways of the X-Men back, there should be concerns. Chief among them is how it happens. With time travel being an important part of the Krakoan era, this could lead to Krakoa never being established. However, it may be the only way to stop Orchis and Nimrod from taking over (read Powers of X for that unfortunate future).
The Krakoa Era ending via time travel would have disastrous results. Hundreds of mutants would killed again or never have existed. Mutants who were once partners, teammates, and friends could become enemies. More importantly, fans would be upset. It might seem like the previous two years were entertaining, but ultimately all for nothing.
On a positive note, maybe everything stays the same. Marvel Comics could hit the reset button and put mutants in a better place than they previously were. It would be nice to see the X-Men doing more than just fighting for their life. Also, if the Krakoan age is over, Genosha is still a place for mutants to settle.
Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out what’s next for the X-Men and what the upcoming new titles will be.
