Marvel releases more Ultimate comic covers with new characters and more
By Mark Lynch
Marvel Comics Ultimate Universe has been perfect. It has taken the good from the previous attempt and removed the bad. Among the good things are the different versions of characters.
Instead of reusing the same heroes and villains and changing their personalities, the creators kept some important things. For example, this Ultimate Steve Rogers isn’t a bully. Part of it is because of how he was defrosted and the state of America (or lack of it). It also looks like Hank Pym will deal with his insecurities instead of taking them out on his wife, Janet van Dyne.
Reports were released that Ultimate She-Hulk would debut during Ultimates No. 3. This means another classic character with a new twist to look forward to. That’s only one of the new heroes, villains, and stories to look forward to. Marvel.com released Ultimate Universe storylines and characters coming up. Here they are and why you should be excited.
Ultimate Sorcerer Supreme
- Comic book: Ultimate Black Panther No. 9
- Writer: Bryan Hill
Whatever’s going on with Wakanda will lead directly to announcing the next Sorcerer Supreme. The cool thing about this is this will be someone new; announcing the Sorcerer Supreme and using Stephen Strange in this place would be a letdown. The Maker removed anyone who’d cause him problems (Ultimate Invasion No. 1) and Stephen Strange would have been on this list. Look for the new Sorcerer Supreme to be Jericho Drumm or a new version of Clea, Magik, or maybe even Wanda Maximoff.
Ultimate X-Men
- Comic book: Ultimate X-Men No. 8
- Writer: Peach MoMoKo
This has been an exciting and fun run. Everything you know about the X-Men has been changed and that’s good. So far, there's no Magento, Professor Xavier, or School for Gifted Youngsters. This is something new and interesting and that looks like that will continue. The only similarities are the power sets and that mutants keep their powers hidden.
The cover of MoMoKo Peach’s Ultimate X-Men No. 8 shows familiar powersets like Cyclops’ optic blasts, Surge’s electrical powers, and more. There's also a character with Bunny ears and another has a staff with a circle on it. They could be Runaways Molly Hayes and Nico Minoru. Peach Momoko could be combining the idea of the X-Men and Runaways.
If that’s not enough, Marvel says readers will learn how the Maker’s Council has kept them under control. He knew they'd eventually rise against them, but is there more to the story?
Ultimate Hawkeye
Comic book: Ultimates No. 5
Writer: Deniz Camp
During Ultimates No. 1, Reed Richards (Dr. Doom in this universe) and Tony Stark (Iron Lad) sent spheres to people who were supposed to be heroes. Within them were costumes, access to superpowers, and explanations of what was taken away from them. Some of the people refused; among them was Clint Barton. Despite him denying his title of Hawkeye, another person takes the mantle. A new Hawkeye will emerge and he’s an indigenous person. Could this be Jason Strongbow (American Eagle on Earth-616) or one of the Proudstars?
Ultimate Evil Green Goblin
- Comic book: Ultimate Spider-Man No. 10
- Writer: Jonathan Hickman
After becoming friends with Harry Osborn, Spider-man's rivalry with the Green Goblin could happen in this universe. The cover of Ultimate Spider-Man No. 10 shows the Goblin flying away with a kidnapped J. Jonah Jameson (a tribute to John Romita Sr.’s cover art).
According to the Marvel.com article cited earlier, J. Jonah Jameson and Ben Parker will choose between, “uncovering secrets or keeping them.” We can guess that it involves something shady within the Osborn family. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s Harry. Gwen Stacy is Harry's wife and who’s to say that Norman Osborn is dead? Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out more.
