Logan is a great movie! Don't get me wrong. This is an incredible take on Wolverine's story, but is it one of the best Marvel movies of all time? That's debatable.
The film is set in the future where mutants haven't been born in decades. Logan follows a much older Logan (Jackman), also known as Wolverine, and Charles Xavier (Stewart), also known as Professor X, who is very sick, as they try to keep Laura (Dafne Keen), a young mutant, safe from those who wish to exploit her.
To me, Logan isn't that overrated, but it definitely feels a little overrated when it's considered one of the best superhero movies of all time. Yes, it's a great story that's so much more gritty and violent than what we've come to expect from Marvel and the X-Men. I think that works super well. I just find it hard to compare it to some of the movies that we think of when we think about Marvel. How can we consider it one of the best superhero movies of all time when it's missing so many of the elements that most, if not all, superhero movies have? It's so much less ambitious from a VFX and inclusive perspective than other Marvel movies.
From a story perspective, it's so much more ambitious than the X-Men movies and many Marvel movies, so I do feel a bit hypocritical complaining about the lack of actual story in so many MCU movies and then criticizing Logan. I don't think I'm being overly critical, though. It's just apples and oranges, you know? It's very difficult to compare when Logan is just so much different than most of the Marvel movies released over the last 15 years.
