15 most popular horror movies of 2023 ranked worst to best
10. Skinamarink
Kyle Edward Ball's feature film directorial debut Skinamarink is certainly ambitious, and I can't help but admire that. But beyond the idea of this movie, I really just don't like it. Seduced by the trailer, I couldn't wait to check out this unique take on childhood fear ahead of its release. But unfortunately, the trailer was the best part about Skinamarink. We didn't need 100 minutes of it.
Skinamarink follows two young siblings who wake up in their home and realize they're all alone. The experimental camera work is intriguing, but at a certain point, I just couldn't ignore the fact that I couldn't see anything. The movie is incredibly creepy in some moments, but it gets old. I will say, I watched this at home which probably contributed to the poor lighting just a bit more, and I might've enjoyed it more in theaters. But in any case, it does nothing for me.
Skinamarink started out as a short called Heck, and I have a feeling I would've preferred that version.

9. Sick
Taking it back to the first month of 2023, Sick was released on Peacock in January and was a nice surprise for horror fans. The movie is directed by John Hyams, but really got attention due to the fact that Scream writer Kevin Williamson co-penned the script. Sick is certainly not revolutionary for the genre, but it's full of suspense and kills, making for a great streaming watch at home.
Sick takes place in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, following a pair of best friends who quarantine together at a family member's lake house. To be honest, the fact that it's about the pandemic didn't have me rushing to watch the movie — I didn't need the reminder! Plus, it seemed like it could've been a cheap gimmick. But truly, I had fun with this one.
While at the lake house, the girls are stalked by a masked intruder and they must fight to survive. I'm not sure if I would've gone to theaters to watch this one, but it's an enjoyable watch from the comfort of your couch, that's for sure.
