A long list of highly-anticipated horror movies were released in 2023, but unfortunately, not all of them were great.

8. Saw X

The Saw franchise returned in 2023 with the 10th installment in the series, this time taking a different approach from the formula we'd been so used to seeing. Directed by Kevin Greutert, Saw X takes place in between the first and second movies, seeing John Kramer / Jigsaw traveling to Mexico City to seek treatment for his cancer.

Desperate to keep living to continue his games, John agrees to undergo a supposedly incredible — and very costly — surgery. But as you'd expect, this doesn't go as planned and John is left in a worse place than he started off in.

Saw X does, of course, feature Jigsaw's games, this time around in a very different location. This change-up is refreshing, though the movie lulls a bit in the first half. It's not my favorite Saw installment, but there are things to like about it.

Saw XI has already been announced, and it's scheduled to premiere in theaters in Sept. 2024.

Directed by Nahnatchka Khan, Totally Killer was a totally pleasant surprise when it hit Amazon Prime Video this year. I wasn't anticipating this one to be such a fun watch, but it really was! The horror-comedy stars Kiernan Shipka as a high schooler named Jamie who must go back in time to stop her mom from being murdered by a serial killer.

Jamie goes back to the 1980s using a time machine her classmate created for a school project and teams up with her high school-age mom to stop the Sweet 16 Killer, which proves to be sweet, strange, and extremely entertaining. Shipka is a great actress and I hope she continues to star in horror movies and shows!
