Netflix renews Supacell sci-fi series for season 2

As per Variety, news came out that the UK-produced sci-fi series Supacell has been renewed for Season 2 on Netflix. The victory lap was broadcasted by one of the co-stars not long after the streaming giant made their announcement Tuesday, Aug. 13 via social media.

Supacell is about a group of five ordinary people who inadvertently manifest superhuman abilities and have no connection barring that they are from South London and they are Black. They are brought together by teleporting delivery driver Michael Lasaki (Tosin Cole).

Created by Rapman, the sci-fi series held its No.1 spot on Netflix for six consecutive weeks globally following its debut on June 27. When this editorial was published, the series remained on Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh at 100% with a 73% Audience Score. Reviews have mostly been positive from Metacritic and the likes of Variety.

This is great news for those who became fans of the series and the industry across the pond, which provides a new perspective for storytelling in this medium from communities in the global majority, particularly Black ethnicities outside of the U.S. and Canada. Variety’s Aramide Tinubu had this to say of the first season in her review saying, “Supacell considers how individualism has caused fractures in Western societies, specifically in Black communities that previously thrived because of collectivity,” again hitting home the importance of breaking the glass ceiling against the status quo for predominantly Black-centered or Pan-African stories and less “white-washed” Non-POCs/Caucasian viewpoints in narratives as well.

As over a month passed since the series dropped on the Big Red-N, this writer and binge-watcher of telly was crossing his fingers over some news. Supacell hit 11.8 million views in its first week and was 1.4 million views as of July 29.

Supacell stars Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Calvin Demba, Josh Tedeku, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi Abrefa, Eddie Marsen, Kyomani Carty, Rayxia Ojo, Ghetts, Digga D, and Giacomo Mancini.
