2024 might be a quiet year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Marvel Studios is hard at work on its upcoming slate of movies including those set to arrive in 2025. Among the confirmed films for next year is Marvel’s next ensemble film Thunderbolts, which will see the returns of several key characters introduced in recent MCU projects coming together on the screen as the Thunderbolts assemble.

Among the team being assembled by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine are several breakout favorites including Black Widow’s Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov, as well Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Hannah John-Kamen returning as Ghost and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Wyatt Russell back as John Walker.

Also returning is one of the MCU’s longest-tenured stars, Sebastian Stan who will be returning to reprise his role as Bucky Barnes. Stan has been a part of the MCU since his debut in Captain America: The First Avengers which was released back in 2011. In the years since, he’s reprised the character in a total of eight projects with appearances in What If…?, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Avengers: Endgame, Avengers, Infinity War, Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man, and, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Across his many appearances, Stan’s character has donned several looks and styles with his most recent appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier seeing Stan’s character sporting a shorter haircut more modern haircut as well as a new blue and black Winter Soldier suit. Many has assumed – and honestly, hoped – Marvel would stick with Bucky’s look from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but it seems they’re changing his look up once again for Thunderbolts.

Sebastian Stan spotted on Thunderbolts set with throwback look

With filming underway on Thunderbolts, new photos from the set have begun to leak out onto social media including one new set photo that teases a return to old for Bucky Barnes.

In the newly released photo from the set, Stan is seen rocking a literal suit but it’s his hairstyle that has drawn the most attention. Instead of donning the shorter haircut that had fans thirsting in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it appears that Stan is once again sporting Bucky’s longer locks which could mean a number of things.

There is a chance that Bucky’s new look could actually be an old look and that the leaked photo from the set is actually designed to be a flashback scene from Bucky’s past. If Marvel were to revisit events from prior to The Falcon and the Winter Solider, they’d need to do so by having Stan rock Bucky’s longer hair that was a signature for the character following his return in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

It’s also possible that there has simply been a lot of time that has passed since the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and that Bucky decided to grow his hair out once again instead of keeping with his shorter style.

Either way, it’s exciting to see Stan back on set reprising his role as Bucky and we can’t wait to see what the film has in store for one of the few OG Marvel heroes when Thunderbolts opens in theaters next year!
