The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy is one of the biggest Netflix Originals, following a quirky and loveable family with superpowers. The series is based on the comic book of the same name by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, and premiered in Feb. 2019. It was created by Steve Blackman (Fargo, Outsiders). The streamer renewed the show for a fourth and final season earlier this year, which is confirmed to be coming out sometime in 2024.

The unconventional action show follows the lives of adopted siblings, the Hargreeves, which consists of Vanya / Number Seven (Elliot Page), Luther / Number One (Tom Hopper), Allison / Number Three (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus / Number Four (Robert Sheehan), Diego / Number Two (David Castañeda), and Number Five (Aidan Gallagher). Throughout the seasons, they're faced with the seemingly impossible task of saving the world from the apocalypse (multiple times!) all while navigating relationships and dealing with their past traumas.

The chemistry between the siblings is fantastic and they each bring such a unique perspective and set of characteristics to the various storylines, which is super fun.

Though it's sad to see another beloved show conclude, I personally think it's for the best. The Umbrella Academy starts off so strong but the third season falls short for me. They introduce too many new characters and not only is it a little difficult to keep up with, but the emotional depth is lost when you're following so many storylines and major events. Though the series is fantastic at action sequences and humorous scenes, it's at its best when it leans into its heartfelt moments.

I'm still looking forward to The Umbrella Academy season 4, but if it went on for longer beyond it, I'm afraid it would simply be overstaying its welcome.
