Sony wants to bring back two iconic Spider-Man actors but refuses to share them with Marvel

It seems Sony is interested in bringing back two major Spider-Man actors but they don't have any interest in sharing them with Marvel's MCU.

Sony and Marvel’s relationship has been an interesting one, to say the least. The studios managed to strike an unexpected deal years ago that allowed Spider-Man to officially enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As part of the original deal between Marvel Studios and Sony, it was arranged for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to appear in a total of five movies making his debut in Captain America: Civil War before going on to lead two solo films (Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home) as well as two Avengers films (Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame).

After the original deal ended with Avengers: Endgame, there was a brief period of time when it looked like Sony was going to walk away from the MCU which threatened to complicate Holland’s Spider-Man. Had a new deal not been inked, Marvel would not have been able to leverage or mention Spider-Man within future MCU films while Sony would have been unable to acknowledge The Avengers and all the fellow heroes Spider-Man fought alongside during his time in the MCU.

Fortunately, the two studios reached a new deal which resulted in the most successful Spider-Man film in the two studios’ partnership with the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, a multiversal crossover film that brought back several characters from Sony’s previous Spider-Man franchises in what proved to be one of the greatest achievements in superhero cinema.

Sony wants to bring back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man characters but not in the MCU

Following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, there has been a resurgence of interest in more from both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man characters with fans begging for a fourth Spider-Man film in the Maguire franchise and a third movie in Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man franchise. Well, it seems Sony has taken notice of fans’ interest in more of the two characters and wants to find a way to bring them back into the fold.

What they don’t want to do is share the characters with Marvel Studios or allow them to be part of the MCU.

According to insider Daniel RPK, Sony is looking to continue building its Spider-Man cinematic universe and hopes to do so by bringing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back into the mix. What’s most interesting about the rumor is that Sony apparently doesn’t want to share the characters with Marvel Studios.

As Daniel RPK alleges, Sony wants to bring Maguire and Garfield into “other Multiverse stuff not related to the MCU.” This honestly makes sense as Sony clearly saw the profit bringing the two former Spider-Man actors into the mix netted, and we can’t blame them for looking to the two iconic and beloved actors as it looks ahead to the future of the live-action Spider-Verse.

What is going to be interesting is to see how Sony might look to bring them into the mix again. Could it be in a crossover film that unites both actors again in one film, perhaps dealing with the fallout of the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, or whether they might look to continue to carve out the Spider-Man Multiverse via solo projects featuring the two characters set within their existing universe.

Regardless, the fact that Sony is still interested in bringing them back into the mix is a win for Spider-Man fans and signals that Sony has big plans for the future of the character. What’ll be interesting is to see exactly what that future might be – if only we could call upon Madame Web to give us the scoop!
