Spider-Man actors over the years: Where are they now?

From 2002 through 2021, we've seen three completely different variations of the Spider-Man character brought to life in a live-action form. Each actor has gone on to work on some incredible projects that didn't involve the suit. We look at each actor's career and what they've done since putting on the costume.

We always have pop culture moments where you look back and know where you were the first time something happened. I look back to 2021 when I was sitting in a theater in Atlanta, Georgia, where you saw the Spider-Man meme come to life with all three Spider-Mans hitting the screen for the first time together. Watching Tobey Macguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland on the screen together created one of the most talked about scenes in a movie this century.

Tobey Maguire

Spider-Man Movies: Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Tobey Maguire was the first actor to don the Spider-Man suit and did so over three movies in a six-year span. Maguire led the way in his first film, with critics clamoring over the film, which hit 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Spider-Man 2 found similar success with Spider-Man 3 falling short of expectations. The three movies brought in over a billion dollars at the box office. 

Since wearing the suit, Maquire has been quite picky about the roles that he has played since. In 2009, he starred in the critical hit Brothers alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. Four years later, he starred next to Academy Award-winner Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby. Before his brief return as Spider-Man in the 2021 Spider-Man: No Way Home, Maquire's last performance was in the 2022 film Babylon. 

Andrew Garfield

Spider-Man Movies: The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Five short years after hanging up the Spider-Man suit, Sony created a new universe with Andrew Garfield starring as Peter Parker. Garfield's stint as Spider-Man was brief after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was met with lackluster reviews. The films didn't gather as much at the box office as Maguire's did, but fans have been clamoring for the third one ever since. 

Two years after putting on the suit for the last time (ish), Andrew Garfield found himself at the center of the 2016 awards circuit with his powerhouse performance in Hacksaw Ridge. Garfield was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as Desmond Doss.

It didn't take Garfield long to find awards love again with his performance as Jonathan Larson in tick, tick... BOOM! landing him his second Academy Award nomination. Shortly after, he found success on the small screen with his performance in the FX series Under the Banner of Heaven, which landed him a Prime Time Emmy Nomination. 

Tom Holland

Spider-Man Movies: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

After Garfield's brief stint as Spider-Man, the world was introduced to Tom Holland as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. This was the first of six appearances as Spider-Man for Holland. With three standalone films under his belt and a potential fourth coming, nobody has worn the costume more than him. The franchise has been very lucrative for the Sony/Marvel partnership, with the film bringing in over 1.5 billion dollars at the box office. 

Although being Spider-Man has kept him busy, Holland has found time to jump into other projects. He has lent his voice in several films, including Dolittle, Spies in Disguise, and Onward. The latter, he received an Annie Award Nomination for his voice work. He worked with Netflix on the thriller The Devil All the Time, Apple TV+ on Cherry, and his most recent adventure, Uncharted, which is in talks for a sequel. In 2023, he starred as Danny Sullivan in the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room, which earned him a Critics Choice Awards nomination.
