If you’ve made it this far, you’ve already seen that 2023 was not a good year for DC. The year has been plagued with underwhelming and underperforming blockbusters which marked a brutal conclusion to the DCEU. As a whole, it wasn’t a good year for DC but there was one really bright spot this year: Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle has essentially helped to soft launch the new DCU as James Gunn has made it clear the movie was not set within the DCEU, and we’re incredibly grateful for that because it means this character could actually have a future under the new DC banner.

Introducing a lesser-known character can be a gamble, but this is one that absolutely paid off. This movie had so much heart and was truly one of the most entertaining and memorable superhero origin movies we’ve seen in some time.

Xolo Maridueña was brilliant and stole the show as the title hero. His charismatic performance was flawless and made it easy to fall in love with Jaime Reyes from the moment we first met him. He was truly born to play this role and DC struck gold with this casting as I for one hope to see Maridueña playing the character for years to come!
