3. The Marvels

It’s been a while since I have had as much fun seeing a Marvel movie as I did when seeing The Marvels in theaters.

The movie brings together the trio of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) in the most unexpected and hilarious of ways! Essentially, the trio’s peers become entangled causing them to switch places with one another whenever one of them uses their powers.

Let’s start with the power-swapping thread. This was honestly one of the most well-executed plot devices we’ve seen from Marvel in a while and resulted in some of the most intricate, fun, and visually stunning fight sequences the MCU has seen. Yea, the film’s villain isn’t exactly the most memorable but she serves her purpose in giving the Marvels a worthy adversary to face off against.

The Marvels embraces the zaniness of the comic book genre to deliver some of the funniest scenes we’ve seen in a long time such as the Flerken kittens scene which was hands down one of the wildest and funniest moments Marvel has ever gifted fans with.

The entire ensemble shined but Vellani was the true scene stealer, with a genuine performance true of that of a Marvel super fan getting to work alongside her heroes. She had already established herself as a bright spot in this new MCU and further cemented herself as a star destined to help carry the MCU into the future.

Speaking of which, many have complained that the movie wasn’t as connected to the broader MCU as it should have been. To that I say, were we watching the same movie? The Marvels is the first movie that felt like it actually pulled several narratives together while laying the groundwork for several major projects in development including the X-Men’s arrival and the assembling of The Young Avengers.

This move was perfect and deserves more love than it’s been given!
