Superman and Lois season 4 finally gets a release date
The CW has a long legacy with DC TV programming thanks to the success of the Arrowverse, but its time in the superhero business will unfortunately come to a close with the fourth and final season of Superman and Lois. The beloved series, which stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as the titular pair, is the network's most-watched show, and it was renewed for a fourth season last summer.
That season has been filmed in its entirety but it has yet to air, with one of the only real pieces of news coming out within the last year about it being that it would be the show's last; a decision that, surprisingly, wasn't down to The CW. The good news is that we now finally know when it will be making its presence felt on the network.
Superman and Lois season 4 gets a two-hour premiere this fall
Superman and Lois season 4 will premiere on The CW on Thursday, October 17 2024, at 8:00 p.m. ET. It will also have a special two-hour premiere, with a second episode airing in the 9:00 p.m. ET timeslot, launching the final season with an emphatic bang.
The CW made the announcement via TVLine while unveiling its fall 2024 schedule, confirming that Superman and Lois' final season will be paired with new drama The Librarians: The Next Chapter in the weeks after its premiere. This comes after the network revealed earlier this year that the DC TV series would move from its signature Tuesday night timeslot that it has held since it premiered in 2021 (although it aired in the 9:00 p.m. ET slot in its first season). It's a questionable decision given the ratings that the show gets, but it's also understandable given that Tuesday nights will now air WWE NXT, which broadcasts live.
The third season of the show concluded last summer with what was undoubtedly one of its most jaw-dropping episodes ever, as the Man of Steel ended up battling infamous Superman villain Doomsday. The pair fought each other into space with an epic showdown that ended the season on one heck of a cliffhanger. Naturally fans were concerned that the show wouldn't get renewed because of the creative overhaul going on at The CW (though that cliffhanger would have been a serve), but thankfully the renewal came through.
The show's premature ending with season 4 (it originally had a five-season plan) was down to DC Studios' new Superman movie. According to The CW's Brad Schwartz, the studio didn't want a competing Superman product in the marketplace - a revelation that resulted in some understandable backlash from fans given that DC Studios will still allow three separate Batman movie universes to coexist.
The end of Superman and Lois will mark the end of an era for The CW. Not only is it the last DC TV program spun out of the Arrowverse franchise, it will be one of the last two remaining CW shows from the previous leadership still left on the network by the time that it airs, so when it does bow out, only All American will remain.
But as we've come to expect with Superman and Lois at this point, its final season will undoubtedly see it go out on a high, and we can't wait for it to reach new heights before it does so.
