Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Last Ronin is becoming an R-rated movie
By Mark Lynch
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a popular movie and TV show franchise. However, their comic books are mentioned last even though they predate both. In 2020, the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin shocked the world. It was a callback to the original TMNT comics when the Ninja Turtles stories were dark and violent.
A year after the series concluded, an announcement came that a Last Ronin video game was being developed. This wasn’t shocking. It’s the right story and character to become a game. There’s more great news for TMNT fans. A live-action Last Ronin movie is coming and it will be R-rated.
This will be the first time the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be adapted for adults in movie form. The closest was the first movie. While it was rated PG-13, it was still marketed towards kids. The Last Ronin is going to change that. Viewers should expect a lot of blood, adult language, and content that people don’t normally see from the turtles outside of comic books. Hopefully, this project will do well. Not just for The Last Ronin team. This is a good thing for all of comics.
The superhero genre has gotten a lot of criticism. The projects that seem above the bad press are ones with mature storylines. Shows like Invincible, The Boys, and Gen V are good examples. They’re all adult projects and earn their rating. However, X-Men ‘97 has balanced adult and child-friendly stories. “Remember It” was the most emotional story we’ve seen from the show. Even then, there wasn’t an overabundance of gore. They prove that fans are craving something new.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin will continue to break boundaries for comic book creators. They’ll see that doing something original is a good thing. They can make stories that stand out. In a world like this, only the bold survive and The Last Ronin was a bold series.
