6. Cicada

Cicada may not have been a completely one-dimensional villain like The Hotness, but he wasn't built to last for a full season of 22 episodes either. Though he had the look, the motivation, and a chilling reputation something was off with the season 5 big bad and it didn't take fans long to grow weary of the monotone baddie.

The truth is that The Flash wrote itself into a corner with Cicada, choosing to hold his backstory until later into the season, which did unfortunately make him come off as a bit flat. But that could have been worth it if he didn't spend every episode he appeared in repeating the same cycle over and over again. And that cycle involved momentarily winning a fight against a member of Team Flash but ultimately losing the war, fleeing the moment that things didn't go his way.

Orlin Dwyer had the makings of a decent villain on paper, but the execution of his storyline let him down completely, so by the time the crux of that backstory was revealed, audiences just didn't care. The longer he stuck around, the longer the show was doomed to repeat the cycle of battle-lose-escape with him, and it was just too much.

Cicada was known for his one-liners like "This ends now", but the truth is that it didn't end as quick as it should have because he wasn't worth the amount of time and effort the show was investing in him.
