The Flash dominated television for a whole decade but fans weren't particularly fond of these episodes.

2. "Hear No Evil" (season 9, episode 2)

I remember watching the first few moments of "Hear No Evil" and appreciating the atmosphere of it. I like when shows come off the back of a cheery premiere with a much more serious sophomore outing, and the subject matter here certainly lent itself to that - as did the rainy backdrop. And then the episode continued.

The basic plot-of-the-week element of this episode was fine, and it was a treat to see Andy Mientus back as Pied Piper again. The problem lay with the rest of the episode, as this was the one in which it was revealed that Caitlin had practically "died" trying to bring Frost back and that new personality, Khione, now inhabited her body. It was then up to members of Team Flash to choose between bringing back Caitlin or Frost before Khione stepped up for herself and chose to remain in the body instead.

The moral ramifications of having this debate without including characters like Caitlin's own mother and her best friend Cisco aside, the fact that everyone was so nonchalant about the fact that Caitlin - an original Team Flash member and best friend of everyone on the show - had essentially died was just baffling. No tears were shed, and no aftermath set in. Instead, Barry, Iris, Chester, Allegra, Cecile, and Joe all decided to go out and party because "it's what Caitlin would have wanted". If you say so.

How out-of-character do these characters have to act to make this storyline work? You already know the answer to that question, because this was an unforgivable show of disrespect to one of the show's longest-standing regulars and every other character on the show for forcing them to behave this way. Fans hated this development and I can't argue with them for that. This was a messy, weak story that made it clear Caitlin hadn't died from the beginning (she returned in the series finale) but it's still impossibly hard to believe that this episode actually happened. Believe us, we all wish it didn't.
