Loki made Marvel history last year as the first of the MCU's live-action Disney Plus shows to return for a second season. The Marvel Cinematic Universe had spent the previous three years cultivating a landscape of miniseries that didn't have plans for second seasons, but Loki was the exception to that rule, returning for its heavily-anticipated sophomore outing in October 2023.

The six-part season was a thrilling adventure that brought the God of Mischief back to the Time Variance Authority for more drama after Sylvie's actions led to the branching of countless timelines. It also ended on a rather shocking note that raised questions about the future of the show, particularly if Loki's sacrifice meant that the series wouldn't return for a third season.

Tom Hiddleston has joined the speculation since the finale aired, candidly revealing that he wasn't sure if he'd return to the MCU role in the future. Now, a new update from the actor appears to reinforce this.

Tom Hiddleston discusses Loki's future

Speaking to Variety at the Disney Plus/Hulu event about the future of the show, Tom Hiddleston revealed that he doesn't know if there will be a third season of Loki. He outright stated that he "truthfully doesn't know", before taking a moment to acknowledge how the show allowed him to explore the character in a new way, adding:

"To go from this lost, broken soul in Asgard, and be given a second chance and learn so much about life that he actually gives himself to protect other people, has been such an honor."

While those comments sound a bit like a send-off to the character, it's important to note that we probably will see the trickster again, even if it's not in Loki season 3.

The second season concluded with the God of Mischief saving his friends at the TVA by stepping up to take control of the branched timelines, enchanting them before they can fully die. With that, he takes his rightful place atop the throne of timelines as the God of Stories.

It's a fitting end for the series' run (as it was all about Loki's redemption and the fight to protect the timelines), but that doesn't mean it's the end of the road for Loki himself. He's now preserving the branches, and in The Multiverse Saga, those alternate timelines and universes could still very well come into play. Heck, we're going to see the TVA again in Deadpool and Wolverine.

Hiddleston himself has acknowledged the character's ability to return in the past, also telling Variety:

"There have been other times when I thought it was the end and I’ve been mistaken, but if this is the end, I’m so proud of where we ended up."

He's certainly right when he says that there were "other times" when it seemed like it was the end for Loki. The character was defeated in both Thor and The Avengers only to return (and seemingly die) in Thor: The Dark World. He then truly sacrificed himself in a bid to stop Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, only for the Avengers' time-travel interference in Avengers: Endgame to set an alternate timeline version loose - this is the version that ultimately appeared in Loki.

So, taking all of that into account, we likely will see the God of Mischief again at some point - especially because the Avengers could very well need him in the fight to protect the Multiverse (which would hopefully allow for that long-awaited reunion with his brother Thor). The question is: Will it be in Loki season 3, or has that chapter in the trickster's life come to a close?
