Speaking of James Gunn, let's talk about another underrated DC movie. The Suicide Squad premiered in 2021, and it's easily one of my favorite DC movies of all time. I'm a big fan of Guardians of the Galaxy and some of Gunn's other projects, and it's clear that he's going to elevate some of the DC movies and projects coming in the next few years.
If The Suicide Squad is any indication, DC is in good hands with Gunn at the helm. The Suicide Squad feels the freshest of any of the recent DC movies. It has a strong point of view, plenty of great jokes, laughs, and gags, and most importantly, a solid story with incredible characters.
It's hard to make a movie like this, especially after what happened with DC's attempt at Suicide Squad in 2016. This movie is so much better, and it even features the best part of the original Suicide Squad movie: Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
Overall, The Suicide Squad received stellar reviews from critics and audience members. It's one of the highest-rated DC movies of all time, and it's still underrated in my opinion. It doesn't feel like fans and the public appreciated what Gunn and the team were able to pull off with this movie. It's much more like Deadpool than any other superhero movies, and that's exactly what the DCEU needed exactly when it needed it.
Up next is Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)!
