We're 33 movies into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2024. While most of the Marvel movies are properly rated by fans, there are more than a few films in the series that are quite underrated and deserve more love than they got from fans when they were released in theaters. We took a look back at the MCU's most underrated movies and picked seven Marvel movies that deserve more praise.

Let's get the ranking of the underrated MCU movies started with 2019's Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson.

  • Release Date: March 8, 2019
  • Director: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck
  • Cast: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, Jude Law, and more

Captain Marvel premiered in theaters one month before the release of Avengers: Endgame. Everyone had incredibly high expectations for Captain Marvel, especially with the character joining the Avengers in the fight against Thanos after Infinity War. Overall, Captain Marvel lived up to that hype. The film grossed more than $1.1 billion at the box office. It was a massive financial success, but it was also just a really good movie.

While I don't agree that financial success has anything to do with how good a movie is, Captain Marvel is a solid addition to the MCU and at the perfect time, too. I really like this movie, and I don't think it gets the credit it deserves from fans in setting up Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel, and the overall Kree and Skrulls story. It paves the way for The Marvels and Secret Invasion. While fans might not have loved those titles, it's still important in the overarching MCU story.

Captain Marvel did receive pretty good reviews, but I think it gets lost in the shuffle when talking about the MCU, especially when Endgame premiered a month later and is basically the biggest superhero movie of all time.
