X-Men '97: Each X-Man's best moments throughout the season
By Mark Lynch
One of the best things about X-Men ‘97 is all of the heroes get a chance to shine. Unlike the 20th Century Fox movies, the show didn’t revolve around one person. The balance helped give fans of each character something to look forward to and remember. This article will highlight the most memorable scene from each of Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants. Let’s begin with my favorite.
Morph
There were a lot of funny comments from Morph throughout the season, but the comedy wasn’t their best scene. Morph confessing their love for Wolverine was the best. It didn’t just help keep Logan alive after Magento ripped the metal from his bones. Morph was able to express their true feelings to Logan.
Wolverine
X-Men ‘97 didn’t make the mistake of making Logan the star. He’s part of an amazing team that helped him become a better man. That’s why his biggest scene came with the help of Nightcrawler.
One of the complaints from X-Men: The Animated Series was Wolverine not using his claws on anything except doors, walls, and robots. That changed here. Wolverine was unleashed on Bastian’s human sentinels in a rage fans haven’t seen since Hulk vs Wolverine.
Jean Grey
Jean had more than a few scenes that could be mentioned but one stood above the rest. It happened in episode 3 when she defeated Madelyne Pryor. It wasn’t beating her (even though it was amazing). Jean helping Maddie made this great. Jean could have destroyed her mind. Instead, Jean gave her clone control of her mind and body.
Storm
Magneto said it best when he said Storm is the closest thing to a goddess that the X-Men have. Storm confirmed this when she got her powers back in episode 6. She didn’t need a new machine from Forge or help from Asgard. Storm looks inside and reminds herself that she is a goddess. She didn’t just get her powers back. She gave herself a new hairstyle and uniform too.
Beast
Hank "Beast" McCoy is known best for the way he speaks and X-Men '97 highlights this throughout the series.
During episode 7, Trish Tilby misspoke to Beast regarding what mutants “should do” to help humans be more tolerant towards mutants. Hank l told her how he felt about that comment and Trish's reporting outside the mansion. He wasn’t mean or rude, just direct. It's the perfect example of the Hank McCoy people love.
Roberto Da Costa
Roberto’s build-up was well done. Having him get control of his powers and get over his insecurities took as long as you’d hope. During the season finale, we see the cumulation of everything he’s learned and experienced when he fought Bastion. He may not have won the fight, but viewers saw his potential.
Rogue
You could argue that Rogue was the star of X-Men '97 and you wouldn’t get much resistance. She had the most emotional storyline. It showed when she spoke to Captain America (episode 7). She let him know her disappointment verbally and when she threw his shield into the mountains.
At least a dozen more moments could have been on here, but this was the one people will remember. At least the one that won't make you cry.
Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler joined Wolverine during his fight with Bastion’s human sentinels and stole the show. It was a reminder that Kurt’s teleportation can be an offensive move and look amazing. He also showed the uninformed that he’s proficient with a sword or three.
Magneto
Magneto was released from Bastion’s grasp and had enough. After one word (enough), the Master of Magnetism sent an electromagnetic pulse worldwide. This sent every country back to the Stoneage. It was a show of power some fans may not have known he had.
Jubilee
Jubilee’s powers aren’t just creating fireworks. Bastion found that out the hard way. After decades of not seeing Jubilee do more with her abilities, Jubilee whooped a powerful villain in a major way. A great showing of what’s to come in the future.
Cyclops
There isn’t one moment for Scott Summers. Cyclops’ leadership is the big thing here. From episode 1 Scott held his team together by making the right moves on the field and off. Some people think he shouldn’t have offered Bastion the chance to join them (episode 10), but I understand. Cyclops understood where Bastion was coming from and wanted to give him a second chance. It's what makes the X-Men different from other teams. Despite being treated poorly, they're going to turn the other cheek.
Gambit
We all know the moment. Gambit saved an entire nation with a display of power that no one knew he had. We’ve seen Gambit use his abilities on playing cards, rocks, and cars, but nothing on the scale of a sentinel bigger than a building. He topped it off giving his catchphrase, “The name’s Gambit, mon ami. Remember it." We will remember it, Gambit. We will.
