X-Men '97 season 1 kicks off with a 2-episode premiere (Here's how to watch!)
By Mark Lynch
X-Men the Animated Series remains one of the most influential comic book cartoons ever. When the announcement came that it would return and remain in the 1990s, fans of the original project were pumped. After years of waiting, the show is almost here.
The trailers for X-Men ‘97 have shown a couple of important things. First, the initial essence of the show remained. Storm will still dramatically talk as she uses her powers, Logan still has his gruff voice, and Jubilee being herself hasn’t changed. Second, while stuff remained the same, the program is evolving. Morph is non-binary, Charles Xavier is dead (or dying), and Magneto will join the X-Men. If that’s not enough, a newspaper headline mentioned the Hellfire Gala.
So far, we don’t know how mature the show will be. X-Men the Animated Series dealt with adult topics like death, betrayal, and religion. Each was done tastefully. Disney Plus will likely continue this trend. We’ll have to wait for the two-episode premiere to see if that happens or if we’re looking at more of the same.
It was smart of Disney Plus to debut the show with two episodes. Besides this being reminiscent of the original premiere (that was a two-parter), it gives viewers a bonus episode. That leaves this writer to think something major will happen. Rather than make people a week to hear, “Previously, on X-Men…” viewers can watch it immediately.
