X-Men fans are having quite a feast this year with the release of mega-hit X-Men ‘97 which was both critically acclaimed and loved by fans alike and the upcoming threequel to Deadpool featuring Hugh Jackman reprising his beloved and iconic role of Wolverine and the film being heavily inclined to feature a handful of mutant cameos.

The X-Men ‘97 animated series was such a well-produced and written project, and it's no surprise that it was one of the most viewed series on the Disney Plus streaming app. After ending on a fantastic cliffhanger, fans are yearning for the next season. It was even announced way before the March 2024 premiere that seasons 2 and 3 were confirmed. One would think Disney would not waste time in delivering more X-Men content sooner rather than later but it seems the latter might be the case this time around.

Series writer Beau DeMayo was heavily involved in the first season and even wrote on season 2 but was unfortunately fired ahead of the season 1 premiere. Despite that, he had this to say for the next season in this excerpt from Forbes:

"While season 2 is greenlit and was probably always inevitable, things are…a bit weird. And it appears there’s both good news, and strange news.

Series creator Beau DeMayo, despite being fired ahead of the release of season 1 of X-Men 97, has already written a good amount of season 2. Here’s what he said about the situation:

“I did write a lot of Season 2,” DeMayo said in a tweet. “However, unlike Season 1, I will not be heavily involved or leading production, cast records, design, editorial, post, music, etc., nor doing any production rewrites as it relates to the creative vision of the show.”"

X-Men '97 season 2 might not arrive until Summer 2025

While another season of X-Men '97 is coming, it appears we're going to be waiting later than expected for the next season of the show.

The Cosmic Circus writer Alex Perez shared on his bonus Q&A in The Cosmic Circus June discord, that the second season of the show is being eyed for Summer 2025. "I have heard from multiple sources that the next season of X-Men ’97 is being aimed to be released at some point next year, with a possibility of a Summer release on Disney+," Perez reported of the rumored release window.

So looks like we might have to wait until Summer 2025 to see our favorite mutants in X-Men ‘97, which is later than many fans hoped. Given the first season premiered in March, the hope was that season 2 might arrive in the Spring of 2025. Instead, it appears we're going to have to wait until later in the year for the next season to arrive with the summer release window likely meaning a release between June and August.

As for summer 2024, we can look forward to seeing some familiar faces back on the big screen in Deadpool and Wolverine which hits theaters this July 26 and has been heavily rumored to feature many X-Men characters from the FOX X-Men universe and some new faces as well!
