Amazon MGM Studios' Project Hail Mary has arrived to numbers that are, quite simply, out-of-this-world. The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi epic outperformed expectations, delivering one of the best-performing non-franchise, non-sequel, non-superhero opening weekends of the decade thus far. And it's well-deserved, too.

The film is an adventure for the ages that has resonated with viewers for its heart and warmth as much as it does for the larger-than-life visuals it provides us with throughout. Those visuals look stunning on the big screen, and its numbers prove that people are coming out to the theaters to see it. However, as always in this modern age, some people will prefer to watch it at home. And some people will want to rewatch it at home, too! (I know I do!).

With that in mind, here's when you can expect Project Hail Mary to land on streaming and digital.

Project Hail Mary will likely stream on Prime Video in the summer (after a Spring digital release)

Project Hail Mary is expected to start streaming in the late summer, with the outside potential of an early fall debut, too. Now, bear with us, because there is a reason for that. While previous Amazon MGM theatrical releases such as The Accountant 2 have found their way onto Amazon streamer Prime Video around a 40-ish day delay after their theatrical debuts, Project Hail Mary is a very different ball game.

This is a big-budget theatrical release designed to be seen in movie theaters. Therefore, it's being treated like every other major studio release. That requires a bigger-budget marketing campaign, a relatively long run in movie theaters and a digital VOD release first. This would allow it to enjoy a lengthy run at the box office - which it needs to do considering its massive $200 million budget.

Taking all of that into account, the digital release date will likely come around 45 - 50 days after its theatrical debut, meaning that audiences will be able to purchase or rent Project Hail Mary on platforms such as Apple TV and Amazon's Prime Video store. This is the metric with which Amazon has used to release its tentpoles on digital before, so it's pretty safe to say that the film will be available on digital around May time (with late April being a possibility too).

As for Prime Video, taking into account that Project Hail Mary is performing extremely well at the box office, the studio will likely look to capitalize on that for as long as possible. So, it will likely be a long time before it actually arrives on streaming, with the digital release bumping that further. With that in mind, you can probably expect the movie to have its streaming debut on Prime Video in August / September 2026.

To say that the film defied expectations would be a major understatement. Initial projections had the Ryan Gosling space drama pulling in around $50 million domestically in its opening weekend. Those projections were then upped by Variety to a $63 - $65 million range. It ultimately opened to $81 million, with international takings lifting its opening weekend to a total of $141 million. Needless to say, that's a welcome success story for Amazon MGM Studios.

If the film continues to perform well, that could push the digital release beyond the 45-day window we're all expecting it to debut after. After all, Project Hail Mary reportedly has a break-even point of around $500 million, which is a tall task for any movie in today's day and age - even with the juggernaut $141 million opening. If the string of positive reviews continue to grow that momentum that it's already experiencing, it could be in for a very, very successful run at the box office. And, if that's the case, Amazon MGM could very well delay any planned digital release date to ensure it achieves maximum success in theaters.

Regardless of whether you go and see Project Hail Mary on the big screen or wait to watch it on digital streaming at home, it's one for the ages and you should absolutely check it out!
