When Peacemaker debuted in The Suicide Squad, no one could have anticipated that the spin-off series focused on him would be as good as it was. People expected the show to be funny and the cast to be entertaining, but the depth that came with it was a welcome surprise. It's why fans were worried about its fate when Warner Bros and DC canceled a lot of projects in 2022.
After James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the DC Universe, Peacemaker’s future was in limbo. Yes, it was Gunn's show and it was already renewed by Max at that point in time, so it was in a better position than any other DC project at the time, but no one knew for certain if it would return. And if it did, would it take place in the former DC Extended Universe that it belonged to or the new DCU that was in formation? Thankfully, the series was kept around and would be part of the current DC Comics movie universe.
It’s been over three years since Peacemaker was released, and the second season is nearly upon us. The show will premiere its sophomore outing on Max on August 21, 2025. And, according to an IGN article from 2024, the show will take place after the events of Superman. But as we wait for it, James Gunn has unveiled a new poster and a new trailer for the upcoming season.
John Cena (Christopher Smith/Peacemaker), Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo), Jennifer Holland (Agent Emilia Harcourt), Steve Agee (John Economos), and Eagly will all return for season 2. Considering how great they all were in the first season, it’s not shocking. It’s a case of: “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.”
The cast’s chemistry is too good to alter, and season 2 may not have worked as well if things were changed. That’s not to say someone from the show won’t die or leave the team, but it should start with the people we know. There's also the option of actors and characters not mentioned to debut at some point.
Besides Creature Commandos and Superman, Waller (starring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller) is another TV series on the list of DCU projects. That's why there's no way we don’t see Amanda Waller or hear her name at some point in season 2 of Peacemaker.
"The Wall" is too important to the show and the universe as a whole. Her involvement is also a good way to prepare viewers for her arrival. Who knows? Maybe Waller appears in Superman. The Man of Steel is the kind of person Waller would keep tabs on.
Needless to say, the trailer is epic. Viewers get a sense of what’s coming this season, how it connects to the wider DC Universe (we spotted those Superman cameos in there!) and a lot of jokes. And, with John Cena turning heel in WWE, we may even get a darker, angrier, and more violent Peacemaker. Yes, that’s possible. And it looks like it might happen.
