The Marvel Cinematic Universe is reaching the end of its Multiverse Saga, which means the best is soon to come. Throughout these past few years, audiences have witnessed many shocking Marvel characters make a comeback on the big screen. Even if we all thought Andrew Garfield would never have the chance to swing across New York's skyline as Spider-Man once again or that Hugh Jackman wouldn't be able to slice his way into action with a proper Wolverine suit, we were all proven wrong. But even if those moments were beyond exciting, they were just the beginning.

In 2026, audiences will see how Doctor Doom rises to power and rules the multiverse as a whole. But while all eyes are on Avengers: Doomsday to recapture some of that same magic that 2019's Avengers: Endgame was known for, we can't forget something even bigger is on the horizon. Avengers: Secret Wars will be the big closing chapter. A culmination of everything Marvel has been building towards for the past six years. Unlikely team-ups will be forged, and heartbreaking tragedies will occur. But above all: many thrilling surprises are sure to take the spotlight and make us jump out of our seats in excitement.

Fortunately, it seems one of those astonishing revelations made its way online earlier than expected, and it's everything we could've hoped for.

Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man will reportedly appear in Avengers: Secret Wars

According to scooper account Marvel Source, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man will make an appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars. The beloved Marvel veteran was last seen in the MCU during the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where he prevented Tom Holland's Peter Parker from potentially becoming a villain by taking Norman Osborn's life. Well, if rumors are to be believed, he might have a similar role yet again during Earth's Mightiest Heroes' upcoming adventure, except under very different circumstances.

Back in November, it was reported that all three iterations of Spider-Man will fight in Avengers: Secret Wars. While a reason wasn't specified, many were quick to point out it could be due to Tom Holland's Peter Parker finally getting his hands on the black suit and being corrupted in the process — an event that also happened during the Secret Wars (1984) comic book run. Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man also knows about the dangers of being attached to a symbiote, so not only would it be interesting to see his reaction to facing the same threat once again, but he could be the only one capable of making "Peter 1" come back to reason.

Another popular theory is that Avengers: Secret Wars will feature multiple heroes fighting against each other for the survival of their universe. After all, we know an incursion is coming — an apocalyptic event where two or more universes collide and only one (or sometimes none) survives in the process. So even if all three variants of Spider-Man are on good terms, there could be a scenario where they are forced to face each other to ensure their home universes will be safe. It's worth remembering that the original Secret Wars comic book run also pitted many heroes against each other, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume the live-action adaptation could do the same.

Ever since the MCU brought back Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, fans have been petitioning to see the two share the screen. They were pioneers in the superhero genre, and without them perhaps we wouldn't even be discussing a live-action adaptation of Secret Wars nowadays. Hopefully, the two veterans will be able to cross paths before the Multiverse Saga is over and such an opportunity is forever lost. And who knows? Perhaps even meet other iconic characters such as Wesley Snipes' Blade, or Chris Evans' Captain America (who is rumored to make a comeback as well).

If Spider-Man: No Way Home proved anything, it is that there is still a lot of potential for other iterations of the wall-crawler to steal the spotlight. While it seems unlikely for them to come back in Spider-Man 4 — especially considering the main antagonist could be Mr. Negative, who would be perfect for a street-level story — all eyes are set on Avengers: Secret Wars to break the internet once again by featuring the anticipated arachnid reunion.

Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on May 7, 2027.
